No. 8 IU Faces No. 1 Notre Dame Wednesday Night

SETTING THE SCENE • Indiana is coming off just its second loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Maryland to drop to 2-2-1 in Big Ten play.
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen scored the lone goal for the Hoosiers, his team-best fourth of the season. • The Hoosiers have dropped the last two regular-season meetings with the Fighting Irish, 2-0 in 2013 and 1-0 in 2012. Its last win was a 2-1 2OT victory in the third round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
• The Fighting Irish bring a three-match win streak into the game after dropping two straight before that. • You have to go back to 2008 for IU's last win at Armstrong Stadium, a 3-1 score.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen scored his team-leading fourth goal to bring the Hoosiers back to within one but it was not enough in a 2-1 loss to Maryland on October 19 in Bloomington. • The Terps struck first in the 20th minute when Alex Shinsky broke free with the ball up the left side. After a few deft touches he faced Indiana goalkeeper Colin Webb in a 1v1, where he took a left-footed shot to the far post for his second goal of the year.
• Indiana took six shots in the first half, with its best look coming from Andrew Oliver as he faced Maryland goalkeeper Zack Steffen at the near post. Oliver tried to angle his shot around Steffen but the keeper blocked it out for a corner kick. • Six minutes into the second half the Terps added to their tally as Alex Cronagle scored his first of the year. Mikias Eticha sent in a long ball over the top from 25 yards out, and Cronagle headed the ball over an on-rushing Webb for the score.
• With 33 minutes left in regulation, Tanner Thompson whipped in a free kick that made its way through traffic to Hollinger-Janzen, but the half shot that bounced off his boot was stopped by Steffen. • Hollinger-Janzen came through with his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 73rd minute that cut the Maryland lead in half. Freshman Jack Griffith gets his first point in a Hoosier uniform as his serve from the right side met the head of Hollinger-Janzen, who skied over his defender to hit the upper 90.
• Indiana is out-scoring its opponents 9-4 in the last four matches and 14-7 over the last six matches. • A total of 3,755 fans were on hand in Louisville for the win, a good number of them wearing the Cream and Crimson.
• A tally of 2,309 fans were at the IU-SLU match on October 1 as the Hoosiers are averaging 2,555 fans per game at home.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH • Notre Dame is 8-3-2 overall and brings a three-match win streak into Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
• The Fighting Irish are coming off a 4-1 win at Duke, and toppled Northwestern by a 1-0 score on Oct. 14. • Its three losses have come at the hands of Kentucky (1-0), Boston College (1-0) and Michigan (3-2).
• Patrick Hodan leads all scorers with six goals and two assists (14 points), while Jeffrey Farina is tops in team assists with four. • Ten different Notre Dame players account for the team's 21 goals.
• Thirteen of the team's 21 goals have come in the second half, with 15 of 21 coming after the halftime break. • Notre Dame has taken 203 shots to 130 for opponents.
• Goalkeeper Patrick Wall has allowed 11 goals in 1234:18 minutes for a 0.80 GAA with 34 saves and five shutouts. • Head coach Bobby Clark is in his 14th season at Notre Dame. He is assisted by B.J. Craig, Greg Dalby and Vern Gingerich.

• Other Big Ten rankings include No. 9 Michigan State, No. 13 Penn State, No. 23 Maryland, No. 26 Northwestern, No. 27 Ohio State, No. 75 Michigan, No. 80 Rutgers and No. 138 Wisconsin. • In addition to the Big Ten, IU's opponents include No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 16 Georgetown, No. 17 Saint Louis, No. 24 Louisville, No. 28 Kentucky, No. 37 Dartmouth, No. 50 Marquette, No. 57 Butler, No. 150 Evansville and No. 190 UCF.

HOME SWEET HOME? • Most teams would rather play their big matches at home, but for Indiana it seems to be the opposite.
• The Hoosiers are 5-0 in games away from Armstrong Stadium this year, compared to 3-2-3 in the confines of Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. • The Hoosiers have out-scored opponents 9-2 on the road with three of its five shutouts coming away from home.
• Both IU losses this season have come in Big Ten matches at home, a 1-0 loss to Penn State (Sept. 13) and a 2-1 loss to Maryland (Oct. 19). • This is nothing new for Indiana as in 2012 it was 10-3-1 away from home, while going 6-2-4 away from Armstrong Stadium in 2011.
• In 2013 three of the team's eight victories that season came away from home.
ON TARGET • After a slow start the IU offense has hit midseason form.
• 16 of the Hoosiers' 20 goals this year have come in the last seven games. • Indiana has tallied 96 shots in the seven games, with 48 on frame.
• Prior to the seven matches, just 23 of 88 attempts (26.1 percent) had been on frame. • Femi Hollinger-Janzen has a team-best four goals, with three each from Jamie Vollmer and Tanner Thompson.
• Seven of their 10 combined goals have come in the last seven matches.
OFFENSIVE DEFENDERS • Indiana has gotten a nice offensive lift from its back four in 2014.
• Left back Patrick Doody is second in assists (3), tied for fourth in goals scored (2) and is alone in fourth in total points (7). • Both of Doody's goals have been game winners this year, in a 1-0 win over Dartmouth and a 4-2 victory over UCF.
• Two of his three assists have come in the last three matches, both of which led to goals from Jamie Vollmer. • Freshman centerback Grant Lillard got in on the scoring with his first career goal coming vs. UCF on September 24. He added his first career game winner in IU's 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville.
• It was right back Billy McConnell that set up the score against UCF as he whipped the ball into the box, where the 6-4 Lillard headed it home. McConnell picked up his second assist of the year on Matt Foldesy's score in the win over SLU.
SPREADING THE WEALTH • The Indiana coaching staff preached before the start of the season that goal scoring would be by committee, and that is just what has happened in 2014.
• The Hoosiers are second in the Big Ten in goals scored with 20, with 10 different players accounting for the 20 tallies. • Femi Hollinger-Janzen leads the way with four goals, while Tanner Thompson and Jamie Vollmer have three each.
• Grant Lillard, Patrick Doody and Trevor Swartz have come up with two each. • Six different players have double digits in the shot tally, led by 38 from Thompson.
CAUGHT IN HIS WEBB
• Sophomore Colin Webb has been a standout in goal for IU in 2014 after taking over the starting role at the end of the 2013 season. • Webb picked up his first shutout in a 1-0 win over No. 12 Marquette. For his play vs. the Golden Eagles and also in a 1-1 tie with No. 9 Georgetown, Webb was named to the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic All-Tournament team.
• He posted back-to-back shutouts in 1-0 wins over Kentucky and Dartmouth at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. • Against the Big Green he stopped a penalty kick to preserve the IU victory.
• Webb also picked up back-to-back Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors on September 2 and 9. • His fourth shutout of the year came with three saves in a 0-0 double overtime tie with Butler.
• Shutout number five came with six saves in a 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville. • At Ohio State on October 12 Webb had three saves, including his second penalty kick stop of the season to preserve a 2-1 Indiana victory.
• So far this season Webb has 41 saves and allowed just 10 goals in 1217:59 minutes of action for a 0.74 GAA. • As a true freshman Webb started all three matches in goal in the Big Ten Tournament, leading IU to wins over Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State en route to the program's 12th Big Ten title.
• Webb finished with three shutouts and 29 saves in 578 minutes of action last fall, posting a record of 3-2-1.
EARLY BIRDS • Indiana is wasting no time scoring in matches this year as 11 of its 20 goals have come in the first half.
• Twice this season IU has scored with less than three minutes gone in a game, with Patrick Doody's goal vs. Dartmouth coming at 2:19, and Jamie Vollmer's score against UCF coming at 2:41. • In fact, seven of IU's 19 scores have come with less than 26 minutes elapsed in the game.
