BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team dropped Friday’s contest against No. 2 Maryland, 8-2. The loss drops the Hoosiers to 9-6 on the season and 1-6 in the Big Ten.
Maryland (14-2, 6-1 Big Ten) scored its first goal of the game by a penalty stroke from Anna Dessoye, her eighth goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, the Terrapins went on a streak of four goals in five minutes. Carrie Hanks knocked one in off a rebound on a shot by Maxine Fluharty. That strike was followed by Dessoye’s second goal of the game off the assist from Katie Gerzabek. Gerzabek and Dessoye then assisted Sarah Sprink of a penalty corner to give Maryland a 4-0 lead before Welma Luus scored her third goal of the year to make it 5-0 with less than 17 minutes remaining in the first period.
Before the half, junior Karen Lorite put Indiana on the board by firing one into the back of the net off assists from Brigitta Haller and Caitlin Bearish on a penalty corner.
With Indiana trailing 5-1 to open the second period, Maryland’s Emma Rissinger and Shari Jones each found the back of the net to make it a 7-1 Hoosier deficit. Fluharty scored the Terrapins’ eighth goal of the game off a deflection by an Indiana defender.
Freshman Taylor Pearson recorded her second career goal in the 58th minute to close the gap to 8-2.
The Terrapins outshot the Hoosiers, 27-7, and earned nine corners to Indiana’s two.
The Hoosiers close out their home portion of the schedule on Sunday against No. 7 Louisville. Prior to the game, seniors Maggie Olson, Audra Heilman, Corinne Karch and Caitlin Bearish will be honored as part of the Senior Day festivities.
