Perfect Day of Singles for IU at Hoosier Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Day one of the Hoosier Classic was completed on Friday as the Indiana women’s tennis team hosts its annual fall tournament at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. The Hoosiers went a perfect 4-0 in singles for the day and 2-2 in doubles play.
The day started with a round of singles. There were four draws of singless with eight players in each draw. IU’s Paula Gutierrez earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ayaka Terashi of Morehead State in the Crimson Draw. Kim Schmider, playing in the other half of the Crimson Draw, defeated Middle Tennessee State’s Brittany Huxley in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Hoosier freshman Sarah Baron was victorious over Dominique-Chante Mclean of Morehead State in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Baron’s win let her advance in the Indiana Draw. Mary Beth King earned a win playing in the Hoosier Draw. She downed Cincinnati’s Samantha Perry in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, Schmider and Baron teamed up to defeat Western Michigan’s Labina Petrovska and Yuriko Ono 8-1 before falling in the second round. Gutierrez and King played together and fell short in their opening match but rebounded for an 8-4 win in the consolation side of the draw. There are 14 tandems playing in the main doubles draw for the weekend.
Day two of the Hoosier Classic will get started at 11 a.m. ET at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday, Oct. 25.
