BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University freshman defender Grant Lillard was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Monday after a week that saw him shine on both the offensive and defensive end of the field.Indiana opened last week with a 1-0 victory over then-No. 1 Notre Dame at Armstrong Stadium. Lillard helped anchor a defense that shut out the reigning National Champions for just the fourth time this season.
On Sunday Lillard played a key role in the Hoosiers' 3-1 win at Michigan despite missing most of the first half after a cut above his right eye forced him to leave the game. Thirty seconds after re-entering the match to start the second half, Lillard brought Indiana back from a goal down with a header off Jamie Vollmer's long throw to tie the score at 1-1.
It was Lillard's third goal this season. In the 72nd minute he notched his first career assist as he helped set up a goal from Tanner Thompson that put IU up 3-1.
The Hoosiers (10-2-3) are back in action Wednesday as they travel to Evansville. Game time is 8 p.m. ET.
