No. 2 Indiana Traves to Wisconsin Saturday

SETTING THE SCENE • Indiana begins its regular season and Big Ten wrap up this Saturday as it travels to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Wisconsin Badgers.
• The Hoosiers are coming off a 2-0 win at Evansville and bring a three-match win streak into Madison. • At 3-2-1 the Hoosiers are still in the thick of the Big Ten race but will have to win their remaining two games, as well as get help from some other teams.
• Wisconsin has struggled this season and is still looking for its first Big Ten win at 0-6 overall. Its last win was a 1-0 win over Milwaukee on October 22. • Six of Wisconsin's 10 losses have been one-goal defeats.
NEWS AND NOTES
• First half goals from Grant Lillard and Femi Hollinger-Janzen held up as the Hoosiers posted a 2-0 win at Evansville Wednesday night at McCutchan Stadium. • Freshman defender Lillard used his head to put Indiana up 1-0 in the seventh minute as he crashed the box to head home a corner kick from left back Patrick Doody. That is Lillard's fourth goal of the season. The assist is number four on the year for Doody.
• It is the ninth time this season Indiana has scored a goal within the first 26 minutes of play. • Indiana put its first six shots of the game on frame, forcing UE goalkeeper Eric Teppen into five saves early on. Included in that tally was an angled shot from Doody that gave Teppen trouble in the 30th minute.
• The Hoosiers thought they had a second goal in the 40th minute when Michael Riedford headed home the rebound off a Hollinger-Janzen shot, but the referee's flag was up, signaling Riedford was in an offside position. • Indiana's chances paid off in the 42nd minute when Hollinger-Janzen netted his team-leading fifth of the season, hitting the upper 90 from the left side off the pass from Matt Foldesy.
• Indiana went into the halftime break leading 2-0, including a 9-2 shot advantage with eight of its nine shots on frame. • Evansville has a spell near the IU net with three quick corner kicks, but the Hoosiers limited the Purple Aces to zero shots off those corners before putting the pressure back on the UE net. Kyle Sparks had a chance with a header off service from Doody in the 63rd minute, but his nod was just high.
• In the 67th minute Hollinger-Janzen sent a ball toward goal off the side of his boot but angled it high for an Evansville goal kick. In the 72nd minute Foldesy had a shot off Tanner Thompson's corner kick that was cleared off the line by Evansville's Arlick Ntabana, preventing a third goal. • Three of Evansville's five shots came in the final five minutes of the game as IU goalkeeper Colin Webb was forced to make two late saves to preserve the shutout.
• Indiana finished with a commanding 22-5 shot advantage, led by seven from Thompson. Hollinger-Janzen added four. • A tally of 3,159 fans were at the IU-Notre Dame match on October 22 as the Hoosiers are averaging 2,622 fans per game at home.
SCOUTING THE BADGERS
• Wisconsin is 3-10-2 overall and winless in Big Ten play at 0-6. • Mark Segbers and Tom Barlow share the team lead in goals scored with four each, accounting for half of the team's 16 goals scored.
• Segbers also has a team-best five assists. • Opponents are out-scoring Wisconsin by a 25-16 margin, with the Badgers getting out-shot 202-143.
• Casey Beyers (626:48) and Adrian Remeniuk (793:46) have split time in goal with Beyers 1-4-1 with one shutout and a 1.58 GAA, and Remeniuk 2-6-1 with two shutouts and a 1.59 GAA. • Head coach John Trask is an Indiana alum and former coach for the Hoosiers. He is in his fifth season at Wisconsin. He is assisted by Keith Tiemeyer, Ian Sarachan and Stan Anderson.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana leads the all-time series with Wisconsin, 35-5-5. • Last year was a heartbreaker for IU as it lead 3-1 in the 68th minute before three goals in a 12-minute span gave Wisconsin the 4-3 victory.
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen had a goal in that game, with Tanner Thompson picking up two assists. • Two of Wisconsin's five wins in the series have come in the last three years, with the Badgers 2-0 winners in Madison in 2011.
• IU's last win in Madison came in 2009 by a 1-0 score. Indiana's last win came in 2012, 2-0.

USING HIS HEAD • One of Indiana's best weapons this season has been the noggin of freshman center back Grant Lillard.
• In addition to being a commanding presence in the air defensively, Lillard is tied for second on the team with four goals scored, all of which have been headers. • Lillard has scored in each of IU's last two matches, heading home a long throw from Jamie Vollmer for the Hoosiers' first goal in a 3-1 win at Michigan.
• He then headed home the game winning goal in a 2-0 win at Evansville, knocking in a corner kick from Patrick Doody. • Lillard is tied for second in the Big Ten in goals scored by freshman and is the only freshman in the top 10 that isn't a forward.
LILLARD NAMED B1G DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Indiana University freshman defender Grant Lillard was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Monday after a week that saw him shine on both the offensive and defensive end of the field. • Indiana opened last week with a 1-0 victory over then-No. 1 Notre Dame at Armstrong Stadium. Lillard helped anchor a defense that shut out the reigning National Champions for just the fourth time this season.
• On Sunday Lillard played a key role in the Hoosiers' 3-1 win at Michigan despite missing most of the first half after a cut above his right eye forced him to leave the game. Thirty seconds after re-entering the match to start the second half, Lillard brought Indiana back from a goal down with a header off Jamie Vollmer's long throw to tie the score at 1-1. • It was Lillard's third goal this season. In the 72nd minute he notched his first career assist as he helped set up a goal from Tanner Thompson that put IU up 3-1. • Lillard was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.
HE'S A WINNER
• Senior left back Patrick Doody has been a surprising offensive spark for Indiana this season, second on the team in assists with four and tied for fourth in goals scored with three. • Doody entered this season with two goals to his credit, both coming during the 2013 season.
• What makes Doody's three goals this year special is that all three have been game winners. • Doody's first goal was a free kick that was the difference in a 1-0 win over Dartmouth.
• It was his goal against UCF that was the third of the night for IU in what would be a 4-2 victory over the Knights. • Against No. 1 Notre Dame Doody did something he hadn't done since his pre-teen years, sending in a corner kick that found nothing but net in the 1-0 victory.
• A starter in all 16 matches Doody has also played a key role in seven IU shutouts this season.
TOP 25? NO PROBLEM • Indiana has played some of its best matches this season against top-25 competition, as evidenced by its 4-1-1 record against ranked opponents.
• The Hoosiers opened the 2014 season with a 1-1 tie against No. 9 Georgetown, followed by a 1-0 win over No. 12 Marquette. • IU's first loss of the season came by a 1-0 score at the hands of No. 13 Penn State.
• That was followed by a 3-1 win over No. 8 Saint Louis and a 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville. • Ranked win number four came on October 22 with a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Notre Dame.
SHUT `ER DOWN
• For a center back combination that had exactly zero minutes of collegiate playing time entering the 2014 season, the combination of redshirt sophomore Derek Creviston and freshman Grant Lillard have done a good job of keeping offenses at bay. • Creviston has started all 16 matches this season after not playing a minute during his first two seasons at IU. Creviston has been compared by coaches to former IU standout Caleb Konstanski for his tough, composed play.
• Lillard came to IU has a highly-touted player out of the Chicago Fire Academy and has lived up to the billing in his 16 starts. An imposing physical presence at 6-foot-4, Lillard is strong in the air but also has good feet and stays composed on the ball in high-pressure situations. • The play of Creviston and Lillard has been key to IU's seven shutouts this season.
ON TARGET
• After a slow start the IU offense hit its stride. • 22 of the Hoosiers' 26 goals this year have come in the last 10 games.
• Indiana has tallied 155 shots in the seven games, with 75 on frame. • Prior to the seven matches, just 23 of 88 attempts (26.1 percent) had been on frame.
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen leads the way with five goals, while and Tanner Thompson and Grant Lillard have four each.
EARLY BIRDS • Indiana is wasting no time scoring in matches this year as 15 of its 26 goals have come in the first half.
• Twice this season IU has scored with less than three minutes gone in a game, with Patrick Doody's goal vs. Dartmouth coming at 2:19, and Jamie Vollmer's score against UCF coming at 2:41. • In fact, nine of IU's 26 scores have come with less than 26 minutes elapsed in the game.

OFFENSIVE DEFENDERS • Indiana has gotten a nice offensive lift from its back four in 2014.
• Left back Patrick Doody is second in assists (4), tied for fourth in goals scored (3) and tied for third in total points (10). • Freshman centerback Grant Lillard is tied for second in goals scored with four. He got in on the scoring with his first career goal coming vs. UCF on September 24. He added his first career game winner in IU's 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville.
• His third goal brought IU back even with Michigan in what would be a 3-1 victory in Ann Arbor. He also picked up his first career assist in the game. • Goal number four was his second game winner this year in a 2-0 victory at Evansville.
• It was right back Billy McConnell that set up the score against UCF as he whipped the ball into the box, where the 6-4 Lillard headed it home. McConnell picked up his second assist of the year on Matt Foldesy's score in the win over SLU.
CAUGHT IN HIS WEBB • Sophomore Colin Webb has been a standout in goal for IU in 2014 after taking over the starting role at the end of the 2013 season.
• Webb picked up his first shutout in a 1-0 win over No. 12 Marquette. For his play vs. the Golden Eagles and also in a 1-1 tie with No. 9 Georgetown, Webb was named to the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic All-Tournament team. • He posted back-to-back shutouts in 1-0 wins over Kentucky and Dartmouth at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
• Against the Big Green he stopped a penalty kick to preserve the IU victory. • Webb also picked up back-to-back Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors on September 2 and 9.
• His fourth shutout of the year came with three saves in a 0-0 double overtime tie with Butler. • Shutout number five came with six saves in a 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville.
• His sixth shutout was a 1-0 win over No. 1 Notre Dame on October 22. • Webb recorded his seventh shutout in a 2-0 win at Evansville on October 29.
• At Ohio State on October 12 Webb had three saves, including his second penalty kick stop of the season to preserve a 2-1 Indiana victory. • So far this season Webb has 49 saves and allowed just 11 goals in 1487:59 minutes of action for a 0.67 GAA.
• As a true freshman Webb started all three matches in goal in the Big Ten Tournament, leading IU to wins over Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State en route to the program's 12th Big Ten title. • Webb finished with three shutouts and 29 saves in 578 minutes of action last fall, posting a record of 3-2-1.

• The NCAA released its fourth set of RPI numbers on October 27 and the Hoosiers moved up two spots to No. 2 overall. • Other Big Ten rankings include No. 15 Michigan State, No. 19 Penn State, No. 20 Northwestern, No. 22 Ohio State, No. 23 Maryland, No. 73 Rutgers, No. 76 Michigan, and No. 127 Wisconsin .
• In addition to the Big Ten, IU's opponents include No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 8 Georgetown, No. 18 Louisville, No. 24 Saint Louis, No. 25 Kentucky, No. 38 Dartmouth, No. 44 Marquette, No. 61 Butler, No. 150 Evansville and No. 185 UCF.
IN THE POLLS • Absent from the college soccer preseason rankings, the Hoosiers remain in the top 25 for the ninth-straight week.
