IUXC Teams Place Eighth at Washington Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. -- In a star-studded field at the Washington Invitational on Saturday, the Indiana men's and women's cross country teams both took eighth place. The IU women combined to score 216 points as the men accounted for 157 points.
In the women's 6K run, twin sisters Brittany and Bethany Neeley led the way for the Hoosiers coming in 25th and 29th place, respectively. Brittany, a redshirt freshman, clocked in with a time of 21:00 as Bethany, a sophomore, finished with a time of 21:03. Amanda Behnke was the next Hoosier to score in 44th place in a time of 21:20. Other IU scorers included Jill Whitman (57th, 21:33) and Chanli Mundy (61st, 21:37).
On the men's side, Matt Schwartzer crossed the line in 16th place to lead No. 7 Indiana. Just behind him was teammate Evan Esselink in 17th position. Schwartzer finished the 8K course in a time of 23:47 as Esselink clocked in at 23:48. In his first race of the season, Rorey Hunter was the next Hoosier to finish in 36th place in a time of 24:17. Jason Crist placed 41st overall in 24:24 as Kieran Reilly was the final Indiana scorer with a time of 24:33, good for 47th place.
Northern Arizona, ranked No. 2 in the country, took first place as a team on the men's side. No. 20 UCLA placed second as No. 6 Stanford came in third. On the women's side, the top three finishing teams were No. 3 Oregon in first, No. 4 Stanford in second place and No. 15 Washington in third.
Indiana will next compete on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18, splitting the squads among two meets. The first being the Adidas Invitational in Madison Wis. on the 17th followed by the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind. on the 18th.
