COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Indiana women's soccer team (5-8-1, 1-6-1 Big Ten) concluded its East Coast road trip with a 0-0 draw at Maryland on Sunday. It marked the fourth time in eight Big Ten games that the Hoosiers have played overtime.
Both teams finished the game with 11 shots and three corner kicks, with IU goalkeeper Sarah Stone making two saves and Maryland's keeper, Rachelle Beanlands, recording four saves. For Stone, it is the third shutout of the season and the sixth of her career.
"I thought we came out with very good energy today," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "We did a good job of keeping the ball and moving it through the midfield to create some dangerous opportunities. Defensively, as a unit, we were fantastic. Our communication was much improved and we were working for each other, helping each other and playing for each other."
The last time Indiana played to a 0-0 draw was at Loyola-Chicago on Sept. 1, 2013.
The Hoosiers opened the game as the aggressors, with Abby Smith forcing Beanlands to make a save in the fifth minute. Then in the 13th minute, Indiana drew a pair of corner kicks with Tori Keller's second shot saved again by Beanlands.
Late in the second half, Keller launched another shot on goal, forcing Beanlands to make her final save of the game in the 82nd minute. Indiana also saw Jordan Woolums get in behind the Maryland defenders late in the game but her shot ended up sailing wide left so the teams went to overtime tied at 0-0.
In the first over time session, Kayla Smith's shot in the 93rd minute ended up wide of the goal while Maryland (5-4-3, 3-2-2 Big Ten) was not able to get a shot off. The second extra 10 minute period saw Stone put to the test early, but the Evansville, Indiana, native was up to the task and made the great save.
"They were able to slip someone in behind our defenders," Stone said. "When she got the ball at the top of the box, her touch was a little heavy so I was able to come out and challenge her and get a piece of the shot to keep them off the board."
From there, neither team was able to put another shot on goal over the final seven minutes and game ended in a scoreless draw.
"I think only having one game this week will allow us to put more of the focus on some of the things that we can get better at and correct some of areas that have proven costly for us in recent games" Berbary said.
Indiana will return home to host the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Bill Armstrong Stadium.Media Contact: Nathan Wiechers, nwiecher@indiana.edu
