#16 Indiana Travels to #6 Louisville Tuesday Night

SETTING THE SCENE • Indiana continues its run of top-10 opponents as it travels to Louisville to take on the No. 6 Cardinals.
• The Hoosiers are coming off a 3-1 win over No. 8 Saint Louis with goals from Matt Foldesy, Jamie Vollmer and Tanner Thompson. • IU leads the all-times series with Louisville 16-4-1 but is looking for its first win on the Cardinals home turf since 2005 (0-3 since then).
• Louisville has lost two straight entering Tuesday night's match with Indiana.
NEWS AND NOTES • Indiana trailed in the match for just the second time this year when Saint Louis' Robert Kristo scored 14 seconds into the match.
• The Hoosiers bounced right back as Matt Foldesy talled his first career goal as a Hoosier in the eighth minute, finding the net off a feed from Billy McConnell. • The game-winning goal came in the 23rd minute off the foot of Jamie Vollmer. Left back Patrick Doody crossed the ball into the box, where Vollmer got the side of his foot on it to put the ball past SLU goalkeeper Sascha Otte.
• Tanner Thompson added an insurance score in the 39th minute, putting back a rebound after Vollmer's shot was parried out by Otte. • Goalkeeper Colin Webb tallies four saves in the win, while Thompson led the way with five shot attempts.
• The Hoosiers had a slight lead in the shot tally at 11-9, with six of its 11 attempts on frame. • The win improved Indiana's record to 2-1-1 against ranked opponents this year.
• Starting tonight five of Indiana's next six matches will be on the road. • A tally of 1,736 fans were at the IU-NU match on September 28 as the Hoosiers are averaging 2,590 fans per game at home.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
• Louisville is 5-3-1 on the season and has dropped two-straight matches entering the game with the Hoosiers. • Louisville lost 2-1 at N.C. State on October 3, and lost 1-0 to Ohio State at home on September 30.
• Prior to that the Cardinals had rattled of four-straight wins, starting with a 5-0 victory over Duke on September 13. • Junior forward Ricardo Velazco leads the team with four goals, along with three assists for 11 points.
• Junior midfielder Ben Strong has three goals as the Cardinals have outscored opponents by a 16-8 margin. • Senior goalkeeper Joachim Ball has played all 837:47 minutes, allowing eight goals for a 0.86 GAA with 31 saves and three shutouts.
• In common opponents with IU, Louisville lost 1-0 at Saint Louis and defeated Kentucky by a 2-1 score. • Head coach Ken Lolla is in his ninth season at Louisville. He is assisted by Mario Sanchez and Danny Cepero.

ON TARGET • After a slow start the IU offense has been clicking over the last four matches.
• 10 of the Hoosiers' 14 goals this year have come in the last four games vs. Rutgers (2), UCF (4), Northwestern (1) and Saint Louis (3). • Indiana has tallied 59 shots in the three games, with 30 on frame (51 percent; 9/17 vs. Rutgers; 6/12 vs. UCF; 9/19 vs. Northwestern; 6/11 vs. Saint Louis).
• Prior to the four matches, just 23 of 88 attempts (26.1 percent) had been on frame. • Tanner Thompson has a team-best three goals, with all three coming in the last four games.
OFFENSIVE DEFENDERS
• Indiana has gotten a nice offensive lift from its back four in 2014. • Left back Patrick Doody is tied for second in goals scored (2) and total points (6).
• Both of Doody's goals have been game winners this year, in a 1-0 win over Dartmouth and a 4-2 victory over UCF. • He also has a pair of assists, assisting on Jamie Vollmer's game-winning goal vs. No. 8 Saint Louis.
• Freshman centerback Grant Lillard got in on the scoring with his first career goal coming vs. UCF on September 24. • It was right back Billy McConnell that set up the score as he whipped the ball into the box, where the 6-4 Lillard headed it home. McConnell picked up his second assist of the year on Matt Foldesy's score in the win over SLU.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
• The Indiana coaching staff preached before the start of the season that goal scoring would be by committee, and that is just what has happened in 2014. • The Hoosiers are second in the Big Ten in goals scored with 14, with eight different players accounting for the 14 tallies.
• Tanner Thompson leads the way with three scores, while Jamie Vollmer, Patrick Doody, Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Trevor Swartz have come up with two each. • Five different players have double digits in the shot tally, led by 32 from Thompson.
EARLY BIRDS
• Indiana is wasting no time scoring in matches this year as 10 of its 14 goals have com in the first half. • Twice this season IU has scored with less than three minutes gone in a game, with Patrick Doody's goal vs. Dartmouth coming at 2:19, and Jamie Vollmer's score against UCF coming at 2:41.
• In fact, seven of IU's 14 scores have come with less than 26 minutes elapsed in the game.
OT...EH... • While Indiana has yet to find the back of the net in overtime matches, going 0-0-3 this season, the extra sessions have not been as unkind to the Hoosiers as they were in 2013.
• Last year IU saw eight of its matches go to overtime, going 1-5-2 in those games. • The Hoosiers' only extra time victory of the season came in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, a 2-1 victory over Michigan.
• However, two of its three OT ties this season have come in games where Indiana held a 1-0 lead (Georgetown, Northwestern).
SNAKEBIT? • Junior forward Andrew Oliver has been oh-so-close on several occasions this season but 10 games in is still looking for his first goal of the year.
• The September 28 Northwestern was no different has he was looking at a goal several times and came up just short. • The first opportunity he did put away a rebound of a shot from Tanner Thompson, but was judged to have been offside by the assistant referee.
• In the second half he was making his way to goal with the ball, but a Northwestern defender tripped him up in the box. No penalty call was made. • Just seconds into the first overtime period Oliver broke free with the ball and had a 1v1 opportunity with NU goalkeeper Tyler Miller, but Miller was able to come out and cover the ball just a second before Oliver could get a foot on it.
• Oliver is fourth on the team in shot attempts with 16, but just four have been on frame.
LEANING ON THE FRESHMEN • Indiana has seen good returns from its freshman class in 2014, with the newcomers stepping up both offensively and defensively.
• Freshman midfielder/defender Trevor Swartz is tied for second on the team lead in goals scored with two. Swartz scored the game winner in IU's 1-0 win over Kentucky, and added his second in a 4-2 victory over UCF. • Freshman midfielder Michael Riedford was the one who put home the game winner in IU's 1-0 triumph over Marquette.
• Freshman defender Grant Lillard added his name to the list vs. UCF with his first collegiate goal. Lillard has started all 10 matches and played a key role in the Hoosiers' four shutouts this season. • Freshman Jack Griffith and redshirt freshman Brad Shaw have also seen significant minutes this fall.
NCAA RPI
• The NCAA released its first set of RPI numbers on September 29 and the Hoosiers sit at No. 11 overall and tops in the Big Ten. • Other Big Ten rankings include No. 14 Michigan State, No. 15 Penn State, No. 28 Northwestern, No. 34 Ohio State, No. 65 Rutgers, No. 83 maryland, No. 113 Michigan and No. 120 Wisconsin.
