BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team looks to follow Sunday's victory against No. 4 Duke with its first Big Ten win of the season.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 15 Michigan on Friday. Nicole Volgraf and Sydney Supica both scored for the Hoosiers.
On Sunday, the Hoosiers bounced back in a big way with a 3-2 victory against No. 4 Duke. After being shutout in the first period, Indiana scored three unanswered goals in seven minutes to defeat the Blue Devils. Taylor Pearson started off the Hoosier scoring with her first career goal. Audra Heilman tied the game and Sydney Supica scored the game winner.
SPARRING WITH THE SPARTANS
Michigan State is off to a 7-4 start, including a 2-2 Big Ten start with wins coming against Rutgers and Ohio State. The Spartans have been led by senior Abby Barker, who has found the back of the net 11 times this season.
Michigan State leads the all-time series with the Hoosiers, 16-2. Indiana’s two victories came in 2005 and 2011. Last season, the Hoosiers comeback bid fell short as they lost to the Spartans in Bloomington, 4-3.
There will be a familiar face for one of the Hoosiers as Michigan State sophomore Shelby Supica is cousins with Indiana junior Sydney Supica.
SUPICA'S SUPER WEEKEND
Sydney Supica had a busy weekend, as she recorded two goals and three defensive saves for the Hoosiers. The Ann Arbor native knocked in a goal and had two saves against Michigan on Friday. On Saturday, her goal of a corner proved to be the game winner for Indiana. For her efforts, Supica was voted the #GoIU Student-Athlete of the Week.
TOP-FIVE TAKEDOWN
Indiana’s victory against No. 4 Duke was the first time the Hoosiers have defeated a top-5 opponent since a 2006 win against then-No. 5 Ohio State.
200 CLUB
After recording 15 saves over the weekend, Maggie Olson became only the fourth player in Indiana’s history to record 200 saves. She is fourth in program history in saves, and only one behind field hockey alumnus Katie Kanara for third place.
