BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A season ago the Indiana volleyball team won one Big Ten match. On Wednesday night the Hoosiers beat Rutgers 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 15-15) and accomplished something only two teams have done since 1985.
With the win, the Hoosiers collected their sixth Big Ten victory to equal their conference win total from the last three years combined. Also with the win the Hoosiers went from one Big Ten win a season ago to six wins, something done now only three times since 1985, two by IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan and the Indiana Hoosiers.
Sophomore setter Megan Tallman recorded her 1,000th assist of the season and is now the 14th IU volleyball player to reach 1,000 for a season. Tallman has 1,010 for the season and 1,699 for her career.
Senior Morgan Leach gave the Hoosiers (15-12, 6-9) a big lift to start as she connected on six kills on eight swings in the opening set and finished the match with 14 kills on 22 swings for a .591 hitting percentage. Leach moved into 16th on the Hoosiers all-time list for career kills and now has 1,074 for her career.
Junior Amelia Anderson recorded 14 kills and sophomore outside hitter Taylor Lebo posted her 11th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs. Lebo also added five aces and now has 49 for the season, which ranks ninth on the Hoosiers all-time list for aces in a season.
After winning the first set 25-20, the second set brought a battle from Rutgers with 20 ties and 11 lead changes and although the Hoosiers led 21-18 on a block from Leach and sophomore Jazzmine McDonald, Rutgers went on an 4-1 run to tie the score 22-22.
The teams traded kills on back-to-back points to tie the score at 24-24. After an attack error by Anderson she came back to get a kill to tie the score at 25-25. The Hoosiers forced Rutgers into an attack error and sophomore setter Megan Tallman put up one of her 24 assists to Chante George, who slammed down a kill to win the set 27-25.
In the third set the Hoosiers jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage on a kill by Leach, but Rutgers came back to get within three at 12-9. From there Indiana used an 8-2 run to seize control of the set and go up 20-11. The Hoosiers wrapped up the set and the match with back-to-back kills by Lebo and junior middle blocker Awele Nwaeze.
The Hoosiers are now in a four-way tie for seventh-place in the Big Ten standings and will travel to Michigan State, one of the teams they are tied with, for a match on Saturday Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
