BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team announced the signing of four players today. The Hoosiers will add Indiana natives Sarah Galovich (Ft. Wayne, Ind.), Nicole Lawvere (Upland, Ind.) and Josie Wood (Denver, Ind.), as well as Ohio's Tara Trainer (Lebanon, Ohio).
"I'm very excited for this class to come in," said Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner. "They're extremely strong all the way around and they are going to bring a lot to the table. I can see all of them contributing right off the bat so I'm just really excited."
"Obviously our game is a lot about pitching and we have two really strong pitchers coming in and two utility players that can really help us out in multiple areas and I look for them to have a huge impact on our program," said Gardner.
Here is a closer look at each of the four signees:
Sarah Galovich | Infielder
Ft. Wayne, Ind. | Homestead High School
Three-time All-Conference selection from Homestead High School ... after setting a school record for assists in a single season (76) and pulling in a fielding percentage of .946 in 2013-14, Galovich was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year... recorded a .440 batting average last season while earning an on-base percentage of .481. ... with 113 career hits, she is on pace to break her high school's career hitting record of 151.
"She is a very talented athlete, " said Gardner. "She has a bunch of different skills, can play multiple positions, she's fast and also has some power so I'm really excited about bringing her into our Hoosier family."
Nicole Lawvere | Utility
Upland, Ind. | Eastbrook High School
Helped lead Eastbrook to its first sectional title since 1995 in her sophomore season ... through 58 career high school games, Lawvere has belted a school-record 24 home runs and knocked in 100 RBI's while maintaining a .559 batting average ... she also holds school records for most home runs (11) and RBIs (53) in a single season from her sophomore campaign ... an All-Conference selection and school MVP, as well a member of the Marion Chronicle-Tribune's All-County Team and Top Spring Athlete of the Year ... the Chronicle-Tribune also named Lawvere its 2013 Pitcher of the Year.
"She's a different talent multi-position player - I've seen her play third, I've seen her play short and I do know in high school she's done some pitching," said Gardner. "She also has a lot of pop, a lot of home run power and is definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with."
Tara Trainer | Pitcher
Lebanon, Ohio | Lebanon High School
Recorded 256 strikeouts and garnered a .45 ERA on her way to a 19-1 record in her junior season, a mark that helped Lebanon to a No. 1 ranking in the Ohio coaches poll, as well as a Final Four appearance in the State Championship Tournament ... helped lead Lebanon High School to three consecutive conference, sectional and district championships, as well as two regional championships ... the team made its first appearance in the State Championship Tournament in school history during her freshman campaign ... a two-time Greater Western Ohio Conference First Team All-Conference selection, as well as a two-time GWOC South Division First Team honoree. ... for her efforts in her junior campaign, she was also named First Team All-State, a MaxPreps All-American and the Cincinnati Enquirer All-Area Softball Player of the Year, as well as the GWOC South Division Athlete of the Year.
"She is a very talented pitcher who can move the ball all over the place, came in second in state last year and was 19-1," said Gardner. "The kid is amazing. You'll look at her and I think a lot of people think she's a small pitcher but she actually has a lot of ball movement and huge upside."
Josie Wood | Pitcher
Denver, Ind. | North Miami Jr./Sr. High School
Three-time All-Conference selection and two-time team MVP... named Miami County Athlete of the Year and Rochester All-Area Player of the Year in her junior season ... had a school record 306 strikeouts in her junior season. Wood, the team captain, pitched her way to a 22-1 record last season with a .023 ERA ... the holder of numerous school career records, including batting average (.606), home runs (24), strikeouts (698) and wins (51) ... North Miami softball won its first-ever state title in 2014, marking only the second state championship in the athletic department's history ... on the offensive side, Wood knocked in 16 home runs with a .629 batting average in her junior season.
"Josie Wood comes from Denver, Ind. and, as you can see, we have a lot of kids from Indiana coming in," said Gardner. "Josie's a power pitcher who can also hit home runs - I think she's going to set most statistical records at her high school. She is just an amazing athlete to watch - fun to watch all the way around and absolutely brings some power to our team."
