“We are fortunate to have received commitments from both Taylor Swope and Claire Woods, who will join the IUFH program in Fall 2015,” said Indiana head coach Amy Robertson. “We were looking for quality over quantity and both young women are exactly what we need in our program to build toward a successful future. They are both exceptional students, on both our talent level and team culture. One of the best things about Claire and Taylor is that their best hockey is still ahead of them. “
“We have had a long-time relationship with both players, who have attended camps and clinics at IU and whom we have had the opportunity to watch grow since they were in grade nine,” said Robertson.
Swope, a midfielder from St. Ursula Academy, is a two-time All-Ohio and First-Team All League selection. After a 10-goal and four-assist effort in her junior year, she was also named to the Harrow Sports All-Region All-America Team and the Cincinnati Enquirer Field Hockey Player of the Year. After leading her team in scoring with eight goals and six assists during her senior campaign, Swope helped St. Ursula place third in the league.
“Taylor’s best attributes are her work ethic and how dedicated she is toward constant improvement,” said Robertson. “I have witnessed her take leaps in her skill level and game performance each time I have had a chance to see her play. She has an attacking mindset and is also one of the toughest players to beat as her foot speed is possibly the quickest I have ever seen. We can’t wait to see her name on our roster and to watch her push the level of those around her.”
Woods, a forward/midfielder from Nerinx Hall High School, has knocked in a school-record 54 career goals –cruising past the previous mark of 40. In addition, her 39 assists rank second in program history. For her accomplishments, Woods is a three-time All-Conference selection, as well as a two-time All-Metro and Team MVP honoree. Led by Woods, Nerinx Hall was a State Finalist in 2012 and a State Semi-Finalist in 2011. Woods also played in the Junior Olympics in 2012 and 2013, and was a five-time participant in the National Futures Championships.
“Claire is a natural hockey player who is gifted with a great hands, body and ball control,” said Robertson. “She has a very strong overall skill set combined with great all around athletic ability. She is a crafty and effective attacking player with great awareness of what is going on around her. If you watch her it is easy to see that she is a tough competitor who thrives under pressure. She will find a way to give her team an edge. We will benefit right away from her ability to sustain attack and threaten with her skills. We are really looking forward to watching her grow and seeing her compete at the Big Ten level.”
