SETTING THE SCENE • Indiana makes its 28th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 39th trip in the 42nd year of the program's existence.
• The Hoosiers have won eight NCAA titles, second among Division I schools, while its 18 College Cups, 83 NCAA Tournament victories and .739 NCAA Tournament winning percentage are tops in Division I. • Since the NCAA started seeding the tournament in 1994 the Hoosiers have earned a seed 15 times.
• At No. 5 this is Indiana's highest NCAA Tournament seed since 2007 (No. 4). • This is the second meeting between Indiana and Xavier, with both meetings coming in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
QUICK HITS
• Indiana is 8-1-2 away from home this season and is outscoring opponents 20-9 away from Armstrong Stadium. • Indiana is 4-2-2 when facing ranked opponents this season.
• Almost a third (11 of 34) of Indiana's goals this season have come before the 26 minute mark in the match. • Defenders Patrick Doody and Grant Lillard have combined for eight goals and six assists this season.
• Nine of Indiana's regular starting 11 have scored at least one point this season. Only right center back Derek Creviston and goalkeeper Colin Webb have not put points up. • Indiana is 0-0-5 in overtime matches this season.
• The Hoosiers have been held scoreless just twice this season and have not been kept off the scoreboard since September 17 vs. Butler. • Tanner Thompson leads the way in goals scored with six. Last season his brother Tommy finished the year tied for the lead in goals scored with five.
• This is the second-straight season 11 or more Hoosiers had a goal to their credit. In 2013 13 different players scored at least one goal.
LAST TIME OUT • The Hoosiers scratched back from a one-goal deficit but a controversial foul call with four minutes to play set up the game-winning goal for Maryland as the Terps topped the Hoosiers in the Big Ten Tournament title game by a 2-1 score Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field in College Park, Maryland.
• Senior defender Patrick Doody and junior midfielder Andrew Oliver were named to the All-Tournament team. • Redshirt junior Kyle Sparks earned his first career start in place of Femi Hollinger-Janzen, who was unavailable for today's match after suffering a blow to the head in the win over Ohio State on Friday.
• It was back-and-forth with no shots from either side over the first 10 minutes of play with no shot attempts from either side. A long throw from Jamie Vollmer found Patrick Doody, and Grant Lillard got his head on the service for the first shot of the game. • In the 12th minute, Andrew Oliver dished off a cross into the box but Sparks over ran the ball, missing a shot opportunity. In the 16th minute Oliver had a header off a throw from Vollmer that was wide of the frame.
• In the 20th minute Vollmer's long throw gave the Terrapins trouble as he found a wide open Oliver, who sent a blast that required a quick reaction save from goalkeeper Zach Steffen. • In the 25th minute Doody had a shot that looked to be harmless but nearly snuck in the far post, going out for a Maryland goal kick. A yellow card on Maryland's Mikey Ambrose in the 37th minute set up a free kick for Doody, but his service was cleared out. Vollmer got his head on the rebound, but his attempt was high and the offside flag had been raised.
• Colin Webb's first save of the day was an easy one as he picked a header from Tsubasa Endoh out of the air in the 39th minute. • Against the run of play, Maryland found the back of the net in the 42nd minute as the Hoosiers could not clear a scramble in front of the net. Christoffer Wallander-Ianev hit it past Webb and Doody for his first career goal.
• Oliver led the way for Indiana with four shots, three on frame. • Indiana went into the half with a 5-4 advantage in shot attempts, as both teams had two shots on frame.
• Oliver dribbled into the box and got off his third shot of the game but Steffen came up with the save in the 53rd minute. Oliver had another shot in the 55th minute saved by Steffen. • Another throw from Vollmer in the 57th minute, this one from the area of the IU bench, hit its mark in the box but Sparks' header flick on was grabbed by Steffen who was right behind him.
• Oliver's pressure came through in the 64th minute, tying up the match at 1-all. Oliver played the ball into the box and as he tried to maneuver around his defender, Maryland's Dan Metzger sent his attempted clearance back toward the net, where Oliver's redirected it in with his boot. • From that point on the Hoosiers pressed the Maryland goal with attack after attack, but Steffen was up to the task each time, with a save off a Jack Griffith header. Just after the goal a handball by Maryland just inside the box was not called, with Richard Ballard being fouled in the process.
• With just under 15 minutes left in regulation Webb came up with a big body save as he went to the turf as Jeroen Meefout took the shot. • With six minutes left in regulation a corner kick from Mael Corboz took a bounce in the box and the shot from Chris Odoi-Atsem was cleared off the line by Billy McConnell.
• Maryland went back on top with 4:08 to play as the Hoosiers were called for a foul at the top of the box as Grant Lillard was stepped on running down field. Mael Corboz hit it over the wall from 23 yards out and just under the cross bar for the score.

LAST TIME VS. THE MUSKETEERS... • The first career hat trick for junior midfielder Nikita Kotlov came at an opportune time as the No. 16 seed Indiana men's soccer team posted a 4-1 win over Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
• Indiana took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute with Kotlov's first score of the day. Junior Harrison Petts played the ball through traffic before a touch to junior A.J. Corrado. Corrado then found Kotlov in the mix six yards out and he took a shot to the far post. The ball bounced off the post and trickled in as a Xavier defender made one last effort to clear. • The Musketeers made it an even match in the 33rd minute when Matt Walker tallied his 11th goal of the season. The play began with a Gino De Paoli corner kick that made its way into the mixer. Adar Cohen took a shot that was blocked, and Luke Spencer downed the ball to the feet of Walker.
• The tightly-contested match saw each team head to the locker room with six shot attempts at the halftime break. • Neither team put up much of an offensive threat through the first 20 minutes of play in the second period, until Kotlov broke through with the game-winning goal in the 68th minute. Corrado had the ball near the touchline on the right side of goal and played it back to an open Kotlov. With no one closing in and space to move, the junior took a few touches before unleashing a curling shot from 18-yard out.
• Xavier goalkeeper Justin Marshall managed to get his fingertips on it but the powerful shot slammed into the upper 90 for goal No. 2 on the day. • Twelve minutes later a score from freshman Femi Hollinger-Janzen broke the game open as he took a pass from sophomore Eriq Zavaleta on the right side and skipped a shot under Marshall.
• Exactly three minutes later Kotlov iced the game with his third goal of the day. Junior Jacob Bushue did the dirty work on the score, bringing the ball up the left side before sending a rolling serve across the goal mouth. Kotlov only needed to poke in the perfectly-placed ball for his seventh goal of the year. • All seven of Kotlov's goals this season have come in the last eight matches. Corrado's assist was his Big Ten-leading 10th of the season. For Zavaleta he has scored at least one point in four of the last five matches.
SHOULD THE HOOSIERS WIN... • A win Sunday would have Indiana facing the winner of No. 12 Creighton/Oregon State in the third round on Sunday, November 30 at 1 p.m. ET in Bloomington.
ALL-BIG TEN HONORS
• The Big Ten Conference announced the 2014 men's soccer All-Big Ten Teams, with Grant Lillard, Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Tanner Thompson earning all-conference honors. • A defender, Lillard was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Lillard has started all 21 matches at center back for the Hoosiers, anchoring a defense that has posted seven shutout and led Indiana to 11 victories and a ranking as high as No. 1 in the country. Not just a lock-down defender, Lillard has also asserted himself on the offensive side, ranking third on the team in goals scored with four. Two of Lillard's four goals this season have been game winners.
• In addition to Freshman of the Year honors, Lillard was named to the All-Big Ten second team and was a unanimous choice for the All-Freshman Team. This is the third time in the last four years and 13th time overall a Hoosier has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Tommy Thompson won the honor in 2013. • Hollinger-Janzen was named to the All-Big Ten first team for the first time in his career. Hollinger-Janzen is second on the team in goals scored with five and has started all 20 matches played this season. He also ranks third on the team in shots (43), second in shots on goal (20) and is tied for fifth in assists with two.
• Joining Hollinger-Janzen on the All-Big Ten first team is sophomore Thompson. Thompson has been the catalyst of the Indiana offense and leads the team in goals scored with six, while also leading the team in total points with 15 (three assists). Thompson was responsible for the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win at Rutgers, as well as the game winner in a 2-1 win over Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal. He leads the team in shots (69), shots on goal (25) and is 2-for-3 in penalty kick attempts this season. • Hollinger-Janzen and Thompson earn the 96th and 97th first-team All-Big Ten honors for an Indiana player. A total of 53 different Hoosiers have been named to the All-Big Ten first team since the award started in 1991. Indiana is the only school to produce multiple four-time first-team All-Big Ten honorees (Brian Maisonneuve, Todd Yeagley, Aleksey Korol, Yuri Lavrinenko).
• Senior midfielder Dylan Lax was honored with the Sportsmanship Award. Lax has started all 21 games at defensive midfielder for the Hoosiers and came through with his first goal of the season in a 1-1 tie at Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The Hoosiers would go on to win that match 5-4 in penalty kicks.
ROAD WARRIORS • Indiana finished the 2014 regular season with an undefeated mark away from Armstrong Stadium, going 7-0-1.
• Indiana's only road losss of the season came in the Big Ten Tournament final, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Maryland. • It is the 11th time in program history a team has not lost away from home during the regular season, with the last time coming in 2005 (6-0-4).
• IU also had undefeated regular-season road marks in 1997 (10-0), 1996 (6-0-2), 1994 (8-0), 1993 (9-0), 1989 (6-0-1), 1979 (11-0-2), 1978 (11-0), 1976 (9-0-1) and 1974 (6-0). • Over a nine-day period from October 25-November 2, Indiana spent six of the nine days on the road, with three road matches and a final record of 2-0-1 in those games.
• In fact, IU has played six of its last seven games on the road, posting a 3-2-2 record.
TOP 25? NO PROBLEM • Indiana has played some of its best matches this season against top-25 competition, as evidenced by its 4-3-2 record against ranked opponents.
• The Hoosiers opened the 2014 season with a 1-1 tie against No. 9 Georgetown, followed by a 1-0 win over No. 12 Marquette. • IU's first loss of the season came by a 1-0 score at the hands of No. 13 Penn State.
• That was followed by a 3-1 win over No. 8 Saint Louis and a 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville. • Ranked win number four came on October 22 with a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Notre Dame.
• The Hoosiers ended the regular season by falling to No. 21 Michigan State, 3-2. • Indiana and No. 16 Northwestern played to a 1-1 tie in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament on Nov. 9. The Hoosiers prevailed in penalty kicks, 5-4.
• Indiana dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 13 Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament final on November 16.
HE'S A WINNER • Senior left back Patrick Doody has been a surprising offensive spark for Indiana this season, tied for first on the team in assists with five and tied for third in goals scored with four.
• Doody entered this season with two goals to his credit, both coming during the 2013 season. • What makes Doody's three goals this year special is that three of the four have been game winners.
• Doody's first goal was a free kick that was the difference in a 1-0 win over Dartmouth. • It was his goal against UCF that was the third of the night for IU in what would be a 4-2 victory over the Knights.
• Against No. 1 Notre Dame Doody did something he hadn't done since his pre-teen years, sending in a corner kick that found nothing but net in the 1-0 victory. • His fourth goal wasn't the game winner but his free kick did give IU a 1-0 lead in its Big Ten Tournament semifinal match vs. Ohio State. • A starter in all 21 matches Doody has also played a key role in seven IU shutouts this season.
OT...EH...
• While Indiana has yet to find the back of the net in overtime matches, going 0-0-5 this season, the extra sessions have not been as unkind to the Hoosiers as they were in 2013. • Last year IU saw eight of its matches go to overtime, going 1-5-2 in those games.
• The Hoosiers' only extra time victory of the season came in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, a 2-1 victory over Michigan. • However, three of its five OT ties this season have come in games where Indiana held a 1-0 lead (Georgetown, Northwestern twice).
NCAA RPI
• The NCAA released its final regular season set of RPI numbers on November 17 and the Hoosiers finished at No. 6 overall. • Other Big Ten rankings include No. 5 Michigan State, No. 14 Maryland, No. 19 Penn State, No. 22 Northwestern, No. 29 Ohio State, No. 64 Michigan, No. 97 Rutgers and No. 135 Wisconsin.
• In addition to the Big Ten, IU's opponents include No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 7 Georgetown, No. 15 Louisville, No. 25 Saint Louis, No. 27 Dartmouth, No. 32 Kentucky, No. 52 Marquette, No. 68 Butler, No. 147 Evansville and No. 182 UCF. • Indiana went 7-4-3 against teams currently in the RPI top 35.
IN THE POLLS
• Absent from the college soccer preseason rankings, the Hoosiers remained in the top 25 for the final regular season poll. • Indiana climbed two spots to No. 5 in the final NSCAA regular season poll.
• The Hoosiers were at No. 8 in the last Soccer America Top 25 on November 11. • Teams IU has played this season in this week's NSCAA top 25 include No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 6 Maryland, No. 11 Georgetown, No. 13 Michigan State, No. 15 Louisville, No. 17 Northwestern, No. 19 Saint Louis, No. 20 Dartmouth and No. 24 Kentucky.
• Indiana is 5-3-3 against those nine teams.
SPREADING THE WEALTH • The Indiana coaching staff preached before the start of the season that goal scoring would be by committee, and that is just what has happened in 2014.
• The Hoosiers are second in the Big Ten in goals scored with 34, with 11 different players accounting for the 34 tallies. • Tanner Thompson leads the way with six goals, while Femi Hollinger-Janzen has five.
• Patrick Doody, Andrew Oliver and Grant Lillard come in next with four. • Nine different players have double digits in the shot tally, led by 69 from Thompson.
