TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana men's cross country team competed in the NCAA Championships on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course and finished 15th in the team standings. It marks the fourth time in the last five years that Indiana has finished in the top 15 in the national meet.
Indiana came into the meet ranked No. 25 in the country and improved on that tremendously with its finish. Race conditions were very favorable as temperatures were in the 50s under cloudy skies.
Junior Matt Schwartzer was the top IU finisher on the 10K course as he came in 43rd place in a time of 30:59.7. Schwartzer's 43rd place finish was a 38-spot improvement from his run a year ago at NCAAs in 2013 (81st).
The next Hoosier to cross the line was Jason Crist who was 65th, clocking in at 31:14.5. Evan Esselink finished in 122nd with a time of 31:42.2.
Other IU scorers were JR Ricker in 133rd (31:50.6) and Owen Skeete in 138th (31:52.4). As a team the Hoosiers tallied 416 points.
Colorado won the national title for the second straight season. Stanford came in second as a team and Portland was third.
The indoor track and field season will get started on Dec. 12 when Indiana hosts the Hoosier Open at Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington.
