Nov. 4, 2014
SETTING THE SCENE • Indiana wraps up the regular season with a lot on the line as it faces the Michigan State Spartans in the Big Ten finale.
• Michigan State and Indiana have identical 3-2-2 conference records and both are vying for a top-4 finish, which would allow that team to host a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal game on Sunday, November 9. • Even with a victory, Indiana will need help from Ohio State/Northwestern/Maryland to cement a top-four finish.
• Tonight's game also serves as senior night with Kerel Bradford, Patrick Doody, Dylan Lax. Jamie Vollmer and Sean Weidman being honored before the game.
NEWS AND NOTES • Indiana bounced back from a 1-0 deficit and took a 2-1 lead in the second half, but a late goal from Wisconsin and two scoreless overtimes left the Hoosiers and Badgers deadlocked at 2-2 Saturday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison, Wisconsin.
• A fifth-minute shot from Tanner Thompson had potential but a Wisconsin defender stepped into the ball's path in front of goal to block the attempt. In the 15th minute Dylan Lax found himself open up the middle 25 yards out but his line drive went wide right. • Wisconsin had a 5-2 lead in shots but Indiana had weathered the storm until the 37th minute when the Badgers were awarded a penalty kick. Drew Conner converted the goal. Center back Derek Creviston was injured on the play and had to come out, with Kerel Bradford taking his spot.
• Indiana came right back on the attack and netted a pair of corner kicks in the final 20 seconds of play. With the 10-second countdown in effect, Patrick Doody sent in the rebound of one of his corner kicks, finding the head of Matt Foldesy who hit the upper right to knot things at 1-1 with nine seconds left. • It is the second goal of the season for Foldesy, and the fifth assist for Doody, which ties him for the team lead.
• Wisconsin held a 6-5 lead in shots with 2 on goal for the Badgers and one for IU. • Femi Hollinger-Janzen was taken down as he went to goal, setting up a free kick for IU at the top of the box 25 yards out. A curling shot from Thompson was punched out by UW goalkeeper Casey Beyers, bouncing harmlessly off the right post.
• In the 58th minute, Foldesy had an opportunity to turn and shoot but his shot went over the crossbar. With 28 minutes left in regulation a header from Grant Lillard was cleared off the line after he found the end of Thompson's corner kick. • After coming so close throughout the game, Thompson got his goal in the 64th minute. Taking the ball around his defender, he curled a shot from the left side into the upper 90 on the right for his fifth goal of the year and a 2-1 Indiana lead.
• Wisconsin tied things back up in the 72nd minute as Jacob Brindle re-directed a ball in from Adam Lauko. It marks just the third time this season Indiana has given up two goals in a game (UCF, Maryland). • The second Wisconsin goal marked a momentum shift as the Hoosiers struggled to maintain possession after that score.
• Andrew Oliver had a shot early in the first overtime that was saved by Beyers. Doody sent in a corner kick from that save that nearly curled into the upper left of the goal. Femi Hollinger-Janzen had a shot in the 98th minute that was easily scooped by Beyers. • Hollinger-Janzen had a shot in the second half but he couldn't get it on frame as it went well over the goal. Thompson had a shot blocked that landed at Foldesy, and his shot was just inches off the mark as the clock ticked down to four minutes left.
• Doody sent in a corner kick that was misplayed by Beyers, but the ball somehow bounced down and off the crossbar to go back into play. Doody eventually got another shot off for IU that was saved by Beyers. • Indiana finished with an 18-11 shot advantage, including 4-1 in the second OT period. Just four of the 18 shots were on frame, while Colin Webb was credited with a pair of saves.
• A tally of 3,159 fans were at the IU-Notre Dame match on October 22 as the Hoosiers are averaging 2,622 fans per game at home.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS • Michigan State is 9-4-4 overall and 3-2-2 in Big Ten play, coming off a 3-2 loss to Michigan on November 2.
• Much like Indiana, Michigan State scoring is a team effort with Jason Stacy, Jay Chapman and Zach Carroll tied for the team lead with four goals each. • Stacy also leads the squad with seven assists.
• The Spartans are out-scoring opponents 22-12, including a 10-3 goal advantage in the first half of play. • Goalkeeper Zach Bennett has started all 17 matches, playing 1600:59 minutes with 12 goals allowed and 61 saves for a 0.67 GAA. He also has nine solo shutouts.
• Head coach Damon Rensing is in his sixth season at Michigan State. He is assisted by Kylie Stannard, Ben Pirmann and Paul Gilbert.
SERIES HISTORY • Indiana leads the all-time series with Michigan State, 37-7-3.
• The Hoosiers won the last meeting 1-0 at the 2013 Big Ten Tournament after dropping three straight to the Spartans. MSU was a 3-2 double overtime winner during the 2013 regular season and won 2-1 at the 2012 Big Ten Tournament. IU also dropped a 3-0 decision to MSU during the 2012 regular season. • Six of Michigan State's seven wins in the series have come since the 2008 season. Indiana is 3-6-1 in the last nine meetings dating back to the 2008 season.

BIG TEN BREAKDOWN • With one day left of Big Ten action, it is still unclear who will take home the conference regular season title, or where the quarterfinal games of the Big Ten Tournament will take place. • A couple of things are clear: A Maryland win over Rutgers on Wednesday and the Terps win their first B1G title with 16 points. Penn State's B1G season is done as they sit with 15 points.
• A Maryland loss or tie would give PSU at least a share of the title. A Northwestern win over Wisconsin and an Ohio State win over Michigan would also give those two teams 15 points and a three-way tie for the title. • Indiana currently has 11 points and can finish at best with 14 points. Depending on how the other games play out an IU win Wednesday could put them as high as second in the conference or as low as fifth.
• Should Maryland, Northwestern, Michigan and Indiana win Wednesday, IU would be tied with Michigan for fourth place at 14 points, with IU winning that tie breaker based on its 3-1 win at U-M. • The Big Ten tiebreakers are:
1. Head-to-head results 2. Goal difference between goals scored in all conference games
3. Comparison of total goals scored in all conference games 4. Best record by points vs. teams in descending rank order
5. Coin flip • Wednesday's schedule is as follows:
Michigan State (11 pts) at Indiana (11 pts) - 6 p.m. ET Maryland (13 pts) at Rutgers (4 pts) - 7 p.m. ET
Ohio State (12 pts) at Michigan (11 pts) - 7:30 p.m. ET Wisconsin (1 pt) at Northwestern (12 pts) - 8 p.m. ET
ROAD WARRIORS
• Indiana finished the 2014 regular season with an undefeated mark away from Armstrong Stadium, going 7-0-1. • It is the 11th time in program history a team has not lost away from home, with the last time coming in 2005 (6-0-4).
• IU also had undefeated regular-season road marks in 1997 (10-0), 1996 (6-0-2), 1994 (8-0), 1993 (9-0), 1989 (6-0-1), 1979 (11-0-2), 1978 (11-0), 1976 (9-0-1) and 1974 (6-0). • Over a nine-day period from October 25-November 2, Indiana spent six of the nine days on the road, with three road matches and a final record of 2-0-1 in those games.
OT...EH...
• While Indiana has yet to find the back of the net in overtime matches, going 0-0-4 this season, the extra sessions have not been as unkind to the Hoosiers as they were in 2013. • Last year IU saw eight of its matches go to overtime, going 1-5-2 in those games.
• The Hoosiers' only extra time victory of the season came in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, a 2-1 victory over Michigan. • However, two of its four OT ties this season have come in games where Indiana held a 1-0 lead (Georgetown, Northwestern).
NCAA RPI
• The NCAA released its fifth set of RPI numbers on November 3 and the Hoosiers remained in the No. 2 overall. • Other Big Ten rankings include No. 17 Maryland, No. 19 Michigan State, No. 21 Penn State, No. 22 Northwestern, No. 26 Ohio State, No. 43 Michigan, No. 94 Rutgers and No. 118 Wisconsin.
• In addition to the Big Ten, IU's opponents include No. 3 Georgetown, No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 16 Saint Louis, No. 25 Kentucky, No. 29 Louisville, No. 31 Dartmouth, No. 46 Marquette, No. 54 Butler, No. 129 Evansville and No. 180 UCF.
IN THE POLLS • Absent from the college soccer preseason rankings, the Hoosiers remain in the top 25 for the ninth-straight week.
• Indiana remained to No. 2 in the NSCAA poll. • The Hoosiers moved up one spot in the Soccer America Top 25, coming in at No. 3.
• Teams IU has played this season in this week's NSCAA top 25 include No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 11 Georgetown, No. 12 Saint Louis, No. 13 Kentucky, No. 16 Northwestern, No. 17 Maryland, No. 21 Michigan State, No. 23 Penn State. • Indiana is 3-2-2 against those eight teams with the match against Michigan State Wedesday night.
USING HIS HEAD
• One of Indiana's best weapons this season has been the noggin of freshman center back Grant Lillard. • In addition to being a commanding presence in the air defensively, Lillard is tied for third on the team with four goals scored, all of which have been headers.
• Lillard has scored in two of IU's last three matches, heading home a long throw from Jamie Vollmer for the Hoosiers' first goal in a 3-1 win at Michigan. • He then headed home the game winning goal in a 2-0 win at Evansville, knocking in a corner kick from Patrick Doody.
• Lillard is tied for second in the Big Ten in goals scored by freshman and is the only freshman in the top 10 that isn't a forward.
HE'S A WINNER • Senior left back Patrick Doody has been a surprising offensive spark for Indiana this season, tied for first on the team in assists with five and tied for fourth in goals scored with three.
• Doody entered this season with two goals to his credit, both coming during the 2013 season. • What makes Doody's three goals this year special is that all three have been game winners.
• Doody's first goal was a free kick that was the difference in a 1-0 win over Dartmouth. • It was his goal against UCF that was the third of the night for IU in what would be a 4-2 victory over the Knights.
• Against No. 1 Notre Dame Doody did something he hadn't done since his pre-teen years, sending in a corner kick that found nothing but net in the 1-0 victory. • A starter in all 17 matches Doody has also played a key role in seven IU shutouts this season.
• Doody has an assist in each of IU's last two matches, assisting on Grant Lillard's game-winning goal at Evansville and on Matt Foldesy's game-tying goal at Wisconsin.
TOP 25? NO PROBLEM • Indiana has played some of its best matches this season against top-25 competition, as evidenced by its 4-1-1 record against ranked opponents.
• The Hoosiers opened the 2014 season with a 1-1 tie against No. 9 Georgetown, followed by a 1-0 win over No. 12 Marquette. • IU's first loss of the season came by a 1-0 score at the hands of No. 13 Penn State.
• That was followed by a 3-1 win over No. 8 Saint Louis and a 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville. • Ranked win number four came on October 22 with a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Notre Dame.
OFFENSIVE DEFENDERS
• Indiana has gotten a nice offensive lift from its back four in 2014. • Left back Patrick Doody is tied for first in assists (5), tied for fourth in goals scored (3) and tied for third in total points (11).
• Freshman centerback Grant Lillard is third in goals scored with four. He got in on the scoring with his first career goal coming vs. UCF on September 24. He added his first career game winner in IU's 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville. • His third goal brought IU back even with Michigan in what would be a 3-1 victory in Ann Arbor. He also picked up his first career assist in the game.
• Goal number four was his second game winner this year in a 2-0 victory at Evansville. • It was right back Billy McConnell that set up the score against UCF as he whipped the ball into the box, where the 6-4 Lillard headed it home. McConnell picked up his second assist of the year on Matt Foldesy's score in the win over SLU.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
• The Indiana coaching staff preached before the start of the season that goal scoring would be by committee, and that is just what has happened in 2014. • The Hoosiers are tied for first in the Big Ten in goals scored with 28, with 10 different players accounting for the 28 tallies.
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Tanner Thompson leads the way with five goals, while Grant Lillard has four. • Patrick Doody and Jamie Vollmer come in next with three.
• Eight different players have double digits in the shot tally, led by 58 from Thompson.
