Three Hoosiers Pick Up Big Ten Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Three Indiana field hockey players picked up honors from the Big Ten, the conference announced today. Senior Audra Heilman was selected to the First Team All-Big Ten, while junior Sydney Supica was named to the Second Team. Senior Corinne Karch was selected as a recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
"We are extremely proud of Audra and Sydney and all that they have contributed to the Indiana program," said Indiana head coach Amy Robertson. "It is only fitting that they are recognized as members of the 2014 all-Big Ten teams. They are on every opponents scouting report and have been the two engines that make our team run. Audra is one of the most all-around talented and elite field hockey players to ever wear the Indiana uniform. She will give everything she has on both sides of the ball until she has nothing left to put out on the field. She finds ways to score and will work endlessly to help her team get the win. Sydney has been the anchor to our defense and the starter of our attack. She has such a big impact on our ability to possess the ball, score on penalty corners and also to defend against some of the best players and teams in the country. She has been Maggie Olson’s best ally and has come up with an impressive 8 defensive saves mostly made in defensive corners."
This is the third straight year Heilman has been honored by the Big Ten. The Easton, Pa. native was also a member of the First Team last year and was named to the Second Team her sophomore season.
Heilman led Indiana in scoring this season with 14 goals and five assists. She finished her career with the Hoosiers third in program history in goals scored (33), third in points (92) and fourth in assists (26). Heilman picked up Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Sept. 2 after recording hat tricks in each of Indiana’s first two wins of the year.
For the second consecutive season, Supica was named to the Second Team All-Big Ten. The Ann Arbor, Mich. native led the conference in defensive saves with eight, which is also an Indiana program record. On the offensive side, Supica recorded five goals, including the game-winner against No. 4 Duke on Oct. 5.
Karch, who started in 15 games this season and picked up an assist against St. Louis, earned the Sportsmanship Award. The honor is credited to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
"Corinne has consistently represented the IU program with poise, relentless hard work and class," said Robertson. "She is an excellent student and has pushed toward her reaching her full potential on the field as well. She is a great representative of what it means to be a Big Ten and Indiana Hoosier field hockey player."
