BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- Freshman James Blackmon Jr. and junior Nick Zeisloft, both in their debut for the Hoosiers, combined for 50 points as the Indiana men's basketball team rolled to a 94-70 victory over Northwood in its first exhibition game of the season.
Blackmon led the Hoosiers with 26 points and seven rebounds and Zeisloft added 24 points and six boards. Junior Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell contributed 16 points and six assists and junior forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Trailing for most of the first 13 minutes of the contest and behind 24-19 at the 7:16 mark, the Hoosiers used a 9-0 run to seize control and go up 28-24, part of an 18-5 spurt that carried IU into the locker room at halftime with a 38-33 advantage.
"I thought once we settled in," Indiana head coach Tom Crean said, "Zeisloft's first shot almost went through the glass, and he's a tremendous shooter as you saw. But we knew what was to be expected in our first live action in Assembly Hall for a few of those guys. So we are excited about the way we got better in the game, and the changing defenses got us a little bit of momentum and allowed us to get our legs under us."
After surrendering an opening field goal to the Timberwolves to start the second half the Hoosiers used a 13-2 run capped off by a Blackmon three-point field goal to put IU up 51-37.
Leading 51-39 at the first media timeout of the second half, the Hoosiers used a 9-2 run and led 62-45 with 11:54 remaining in the game.
As they continued their balanced attack with all five starters in double-figures, the Hoosiers outscored Northwood, 56-37, in the second half for the final score.
IU held a significant advantage at the free-throw line, where they connected on 31-of-38 (81.6 percent). Northwood was 6-for-9. The Hoosiers made 14-of-15 from the line in the second half and also held a 40-33 advantage on the boards.
"I thought we made a few very good defensive plays where a couple of my guys thought they would end up with the steal and somehow Yogi finds an open guy for a three. That's a special kind of player."
Up next the Hoosiers host Indianapolis in their final exhibition contest on Monday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. ET. IU will open the regular season at home on Nov. 14 against Mississippi Valley State.
