Hoosiers With 8-0 Singles Day at WMU Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Members of the Indiana women’s tennis team went a perfect 8-0 in singles play on Friday to open the Western Michigan University Super Challenge. IU also picked up five doubles victories on the day.
In the top singles draw (Gold Flight), Indiana’s Katie Klyczek made fast work of Marquette’s Ana Pimienta in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. IU’s Alecia Kauss also won in consecutive sets with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) triump over MU’s Erin Gebes.
Stephanie Smith rebounded after a first set loss to take down Notre Dame’s Allison Miller, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5. Shannon Murdy also picked up a singles win for the Hoosiers with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Western Michigan’s Tracy Kuhle in the White Flight.
In the Brown Flight draw, IU’s Kim Schmider defeated Diana Tokar of Marquette in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Paula Gutierrez gave up only two games in her Sorenson Flight win over Cincinnati’s Hannah Willie, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Sarah Baron kept the beat going with a 6-3, 6-2 win against MU’s Aleeza Kanner. Rounding out Indiana’s singles victories on the day was Mary Beth King as she topped Notre Dame’s Alaina Roberts, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Indiana’s Kauss and Schmider went a perfect 2-0 to advance to the semifinals of the lone doubles draw. Other IU tandems picking up wins on the day were Gutierrez and Klyczek, Baron and King, and Murdy and Smith.
Day two of the WMU Super Challenge will get started at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday.
