Gutermuth Sets School Record at Hoosier Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Redshirt junior Sophie Gutermuth set a new Indiana school record in the pole vault as the IU track and field team opened the season at Gladstein Fieldhouse on Friday.
Gutermuth won the pole vault competition with a clearance of 4.22m (13-10), breaking the previous record of 4.21m by IU alum Kelsie Ahbe. The mark for Gutermuth was also a Gladstein Fieldhouse facility record and Hoosier Open record.
Sophomore Tretez Kinnaird won the 1000m run in a time of 2:23.84, the second fastest time in IU school history.
Two freshmen won their collegiate debuts as Jill Whitman won the mile in 4:57.75 and Daniel Kuhn won the 500m dash in 1:03.55. For Kuhn it was the third fastest time in school history.
Junior Cornelius Strickland won the 60m dash in a time of 6.86.
In the 3,000m run sophomore Jeremy Coughler won the race in 8:18.39 and sophomore Brittany Neeley finished second in the women’s race in 9:41.39. Both achieved the seventh best time in the NCAA this season in the men’s and women’s 3K events.
Senior Matt Gerbick finished runner-up in the long jump with a personal best mark of 7.17m (23-06.25). In the men’s weight throw redshirt freshman Andrew Miller finished in sixth-place with a throw of 19.21m, the seventh best mark in school history.
The men’s 5,000m run featured some fast times with four athletes running under 14 minutes and the top-12 also finished better than the previous NCAA best time this season. Senior Evan Esselink was the top IU runner as he finished 11th in 14:26.90.
