Rutgers Downs Indiana in Big Ten Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Betnijah Laney had 20 points and 10 rebounds and No. 17 Rutgers' defense stymied Indiana's offense Sunday afternoon to open Big 10 Conference play with a 66-51 win.

Laney had her ninth double-double of the season, this one coming after she sat out a game with a sprained thumb. Tyler Scaife added 16 points and Kahleah Cooper had 13 while Rachel Hollivay grabbed 12 rebounds.

Larryn Brooks led Indiana with 13 points.

The Hoosiers (10-2) entered the game ranked ninth nationally in field goal percent at .485 while Rutgers (10-2) was eighth in field goal defense at .329. Indiana shot 30 percent (15-50), including 27.6 in the first half to trail 28-24 and the 51 total points was more than 33 below its average.

Rutgers had a 7-0 surge that turned into a 16-5 run, capped by 3-pointers from Cynthia Hernandez on three straight possessions, to lead 50-34 with 10:23 to play.
