BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following his win in the 5,000m run on Saturday at the Indiana Relays, redshirt junior J.R. Ricker has been named the men’s Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week.
Ricker’s career-best time of 14:07.55 in the 5K is the top time in the Big Ten and the third best time in the NCAA this season.
Led by Ricker, the Hoosiers currently have the top three times in the Big Ten in the men’s 5K, all of which are in the top-10 nationally.
IU coach Ron Helmer has talked about the success and dedication of the distance group.
“That group of guys are really good and they work really hard,” Helmer said. “They have bought in at an extraordinary level and they love to compete, so the result is they perform at a pretty high level.”
On the women’s side senior Erica Ridderman and freshman Amanda Behnke hold the top two spots in the Big Ten for the 5K.
This is the sixth weekly Big Ten award for IU track & field this season and second consecutive week they have been honored (last week Matt Schwartzer earned men’s Track Athlete of the Week).
Up next the Hoosiers travel to Notre Dame Feb. 7-8 for the Meyo Invitational and are back at home Feb. 14-15 for the Hoosier Hills meet.
