TEMPE, Ariz. – The Indiana softball team split a pair of games in its opening day of the 2014 season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Hoosiers took a 6-3 win in extra innings with Bradley in their opener and nearly posted an impressive comeback in an 8-6 loss to Portland State.
In the opener with Bradley, Indiana generated nine hits with a pair of players posting multiple-hit efforts. Kassi Farmer went 3-for-3 including a solo homerun and a double, while Erin Lehman connected twice for hits and drove in a run.
Farmer’s round-tripper came in the opening frame to give Indiana a 1-0 lead. The Hoosiers tallied an additional two runs in the fifth on a two-run single from Michelle Huber.
Starting pitcher Meaghan Murphy had held the Bradley offense scoreless through five complete innings, but the Braves eventually settled at the plate and pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth. Brooke Boetjer checked into the circle and allowed another run to score to tie the game at three apiece but eventually closed out the game to earn her first win of the year. She would finish with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
In the top of the eighth, Lehman singled to left to wave around Huber from second base, putting IU ahead 4-3. Saucedo then singled to left and drew the throw relayed in from the outfield as she took a large turn at first. The throw was off the mark and sailed into the outfield and into the fence to allow both Lehman and Saucedo to motor around and add two more runs for Indiana.
Bradley had no answer in the bottom half of the eighth, giving the Hoosiers a 6-3 victory to start the year.
Miscues ultimately inhibited the Cream and Crimson’s chances with Portland State in game two this evening. The Hoosiers committed five errors in the contest which led to five unearned runs in Indiana’s 8-6 loss.
Despite not giving up an earned run, Olson is dealt the setback in just 3.0 innings of work. She struck out one and allowed one hit.
The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Portland State took a 1-0 lead on a pair of IU errors. Indiana responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-out, RBI single from CaraMia Tsirigos.
The Vikings added another four in the fourth on two Indiana errors and four hits before plating three more runs in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead.
A five-run inning from the Hoosiers’ offense cut the game to just two. Lehman led off the fifth with her first collegiate homerun to center field. After a Saucedo double and a pair of walks, Kayla Mathewson blasted a grand slam to right center field, cutting the Vikings’ lead to just two.
The Hoosiers got runners aboard in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t manage to overcome their two-run deficit, falling 8-6 to Portland State.
Indiana will continue action at the Kajikawa Classic tomorrow with Stanford and San Jose State.
