BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana softball team fell 5-0 in its midweek matchup with the No. 8-ranked Kentucky Wildcats this evening at Andy Mohr Field. The Hoosiers, who have now played two top-10 teams this spring, drop to 8-18-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 22-4.
Lora Olson (4-9) was effective through the first 4.2 innings as she held Kentucky scoreless and matched a season-high six strikeouts. It would be during that fifth inning that the Wildcats would strike for three unearned after a three-run homer by Griffin Joiner followed a two-out IU error, giving Kentucky a 3-0 lead.
Meaghan Murphy would enter the game in that inning and close out the remaining 2.1 frames, limiting UK batters to four hits while striking out two.
Breanna Saucedo and Kayla Mathewson reached on singles in the contest, accounting for all of Indiana’s offense against Kentucky’s Lauren Cumbess (7-0) this evening. Saucedo has now hit safely in the past four consecutive games and has reached base in all but four games this season.
Both Olson and Cumbess battled in a true pitchers’ duel through the first four innings of play, but the three-run homer was the difference maker this evening. Kentucky added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh on four hits to set the Cream and Crimson back by five heading into their final at bat. Indiana’s batters were retired in order, dealing IU the 5-0 non-conference setback.
The Hoosiers will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend to open Big Ten play at No. 6 Michigan. First pitch for Friday’s game is set for 4 p.m. ET.
