HOOSIERS RETURN HOME
After opening Big Ten Conference play last weekend at No. 6 Michigan, the Indiana softball team will return to Bloomington, Ind. to host its first home conference series at Andy Mohr Field this season. IU welcomes Ohio State for a three-game series that opens Friday, March 28 with a single game at 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's contests are both set for 1 p.m. start times. A live stream of all three games this weekend will be available on BTN.com and BTN2Go and live audio will be available for free on IUHoosiers.com.
A LOOK AT THE BUCKEYES
The Ohio State Buckeyes will head to Bloomington with a 15-14 overall record and a 3-0 mark in the Big Ten after sweeping Michigan State last weekend.
Indiana leads the overall series with Ohio State 54-38-2. The two teams previously met in the 2013 Big Ten opening weekend March 21-23 in Columbus, Ohio. Indiana went 1-2 with OSU, taking the first of a March 23 doubleheader by a score of 6-4 and snapping OSU's seven-game win-streak. That contest surpassed the three-hour mark in nine innings and featured a combined 30 baserunners and 94 at bats between the two squads.
This season the Buckeyes are currently hitting .280 as a team, which ranks sixth in the Big Ten. Four OSU players are hitting above .300 with Caitlin Conrad pacing the offense at a .376 clip.
In the circle, OSU's pitching staff has tossed 187.2 innings with a 3.39 ERA, good for eighth in the conference. Olivia O'Reilly leads all Buckeye pitchers with a 2.46 ERA and a 5-2 record in 2014.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich. last weekend to open up Big Ten play for the 2014 campaign. Indiana suffered a series sweep at the hands of the No. 6-ranked Michigan Wolverines. The Hoosiers fell 8-0 in six innings in the opening game of a Friday, March 21 doubleheader before dropping game two, 9-1 in five. The series finale would also go to the Wolverines, as Indiana fell 12-3 in six innings of play.
Breanna Saucedo was a bright spot for the Hoosiers in that series, hitting .625 on the weekend with a .667 on-base percentage. She hit safely in each game against Michigan, including an RBI-triple in the second game of the series.
SAUCEDO SHINES
After missing nearly all of the 2013 season due to injury, redshirt senior Breanna Saucedo has quickly made an impact in the Hoosiers' lineup in her return this spring. Saucedo is currently riding a seven-game hit streak dating back to March 14 where she has hit .500 (12-for-24), matching her seven consecutive games with a hit between Feb. 8 through Feb. 21. Saucedo has reached base in all but four games this season and has registered a hit in 23-of-29 games played. She has also been impressive against Top 25 squads in 2014, hitting .455 against ranked teams to boost her career average against Top 25 programs to .309.
LET'S COMPARE
The Indiana pitching staff has given up fewer walks per game that its opponents this spring, issuing just 2.14 free passes per contest compared to opposing teams' 3.28 walks/game. IU hurlers have also posted an average of 5.76 strikeouts per game while opponents have averaged 4.47.
