THE OPENING SPRINT
No. 14 Indiana will head to Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend to compete in a head-to-head match up with No. 17 Michigan at 12:00 pm EST on Saturday. This marks the third time this season that Indiana and the Wolverines have squared off in the pool. The Hoosiers have come out victorious both times with score results of 10-5 and 12-5 respectively.
SHAE SITS ON TOP
Senior Shae Fournier is continuing to state her case that she is the best player in Indiana water polo history. Fournier, who currently holds the record at Indiana for most goals scored in a season with 95, has broken the all-time scoring record at Indiana with 259 career goals.
Fournier broke the record, which was formerly held by Kristin Stanford who had 246 career goals, on senior night during Indiana's only home meet of the season. She scored four goals against Cal Baptist to take the record and lead the Hoosiers to a win. Fournier was promptly named conference Player of the Week for the second time this season, and the 18th of her career, a conference record.
The All-American added two assists and 14 steals durng the Hoosiers' Spring Break trip last week. She is now closing in on Indiana's all-time assist record, needing nine more helpers to break the record of 151 set by Brooke Zimmerman (2006- 08). She is also currently third in career steals (271), and well within reach of the all-time leader in that category as well.
Fournier added season totals of 66 goals, 38 assists, 62 steals, and 35 field blocks during her junior year, which was either first or second on the team in every statistical category. She also tied the record for most goals scored in a match by putting in six against Gannon University.
During her sophomore campaign, Shae put together one of the most productive seasons in program history headlined by a single-season school record of 95 goals. She also finished the season with team-highs of 86 steals and 95 field blocks, to go along with 41 assists. She recorded 29 multi-goal games, including 10 contests with at least four scores.
GAUDREAULT IN GOAL
Keeper Jessica Gaudreault is back again in the cage for Indiana and is quickly turning into one of the top goalkeepers in the conference. Gaudreault, who was named First Team All-Conference for the CWPA Western Division last year as a freshman, and picked up back-to-back defensive player of the week honors from the CWPA for the opening two weeks of the season.
Gaudreault stopped 20 shots in 58 minutes for the Hoosiers to claim the very first Western Division Defensive Player of the Week award for the 2014 season. She recorded nine saves in a 17-9 victory over Iona in the Hoosiers' season- opener, before stopping multiple one-on-one chances against the host Wolverines to key Indiana to a 10-5 win against Michigan.
Jessica posted 38 saves and six steals in 128 minutes be- tween the pipes to claim the February 3 Defensive Player of the Week award for the second straight week. Gaudreault turned in three double-digit save performances and added two assists to her season total. The sophomore keeper's biggest performance came against CWPA-rival Hartwick as she turned aside 13 shots, matching a career high set against Long Beach State Feb. 23, 2013.
This is the third Defensive Player of the Week and fourth weekly honor Gaudreault has earned from the CWPA as she was named co-defensive player of the week for the CWPA alongside teammate Mary Campbell for the week of Feb. 18-24.
Jessica spent the majority of her off-season competing for the Canadian National Team in prestigious tournaments such as the Canada Cup and the Holiday Cup. These were major events helping to set up for other international competition preparing for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Gaudreault, along with fellow Hoosiers Shae Fournier, and Shelby Taylor competed for the Canadian National Team in the World University Games in Russia this summer.
SCHROEDER IN THE MIDDLE
Center Candyce Schroeder is back for her sophomore campaign after sustaining an injury that left her sidelined for several weeks last year. Schroeder was the only freshman to start for the Hoosiers on offense last season, doing her best to hold down the middle for IU.
Candyce made her return noticeable immediately and was named CWPA Player of the Week for the very first week of the season. Schroeder, a sophomore from San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente, registered five goals on six shots in a pair of victories over Iona College and No. 13 Michigan this past weekend. She netted a pair of goals, including the first score of the season for the Hoosiers, as Indiana dispatched Iona by a 17-9 final score in the squad's opening game of the 2014 season. Schroeder followed up the game by recording a hat trick against archrival Michigan as Indiana defeated the Wolverines by a 10-5 final score.
In addition to her goals, she chipped in three assists to factor in nearly a third (eight-of-27) of Indiana's goals on the weekend. Further, she drew three ejections as she claims her second weekly honor from the league office over the past two seasons. She was named Rookie of the Week one time last year for the CWPA.
Schroeder followed up that performance by scoring a new career-high four goals against Brown University at the Brown Invitational.
Candyce has been adding to her defensive repertoire as well. Schroeder leads the team in earned exclusions, totaling 29 on the year. During Indiana's Spring Break excursion out West Candyce tallied games with six, four, and three earned kick-outs.
ALL ABOUT AL
Graduate Student Allison Campbell suited up in an Indiana uniform for the first time during the Michigan Kick-Off after taking a year off from competing at the colligate level. There were no signs of rust for the fifth-year as Campbell netted five goals during the tournament, four coming in the first match alone.
Allison was named CWPA Player of the Week after her unstoppable offensive performance during the Brown Invitational, tallying 11 goals and six assists in her four matches played this weekend.
Campbell kicked off the tournament with two goals as the Hoosiers downed host Brown University, 17-6, and added another in the squad's 11-5 victory over No. 19 Hartwick. The graduate student looked even better Sunday, recording three points in IU's win over Wagner College, 15-5. Campbell earned her first starting nod in the weekend finale win over No. 20 University of the Pacific, 15-9, and proceeded to unload five goals into the back of the cage, marking the fifth 5-goal game of her career.
ASSISTING THE TEAM
Junior Colleen McNaught made a habit of finding open teammates in position to score during both her sophomore and debut seasons at IU. The Dana Hills, Calif. native paced the team with 41 assists last year, while adding 51 helpers the season before, which is third on the IU all-time single- season assists list. Brooke Zimmerman holds the school record with 56 assists in 2008.
McNaught is leading the team in assists so far to kick-off the 2014 season with 27 through 16 games. Her 27th assist, which was earned during Indiana's match against the top-ranked team in the nation, USC, pushed her into seventh on IU's all-time assist list with 119, passing Krista Pereterson who previously held the spot with 118. McNaught needs seven more dimes to pass Deb Simone for sixth with 125.
Colleen has also tied the record for most assists in a single game with five. McNaught started every game for the Hoosiers during the 2013 season and had 29 goals, 41 assists, 27 steals, and 13 field blocks during the year.
