ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Both team's goalies put on a defensive showcase during the rivalry game between No. 14 Indiana and No. 17 Michigan on Saturday afternoon in the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich. Fortunately for the Hoosiers, IU's offense was able to connect on their shots a few more times, and Indiana completed it's regular-season sweep of Michigan with a 7-4 victory.
For the first time in the three match-ups this season, it was Michigan who got the first score and the early lead. A goal from sophomore Candyce Schroeder tied the game at the end of the first period, but another Wolverine goal on a power-play put UM back up 2-1 midway through the second quarter.
Two goals earned by Shae Fournier on 5-meter attempts along with another goal from freshman Ellie Stott gave the Hoosiers a major momentum swing, and the went into halftime with a 4-2 lead. Fournier, who scored three goals all off 5-meter shots, added a steal, and assist, and a field block on the match. Shae is now just eight assists away from breaking the all-time record at Indiana, which is currently held by Brooke Zimmerman with 151.
Both teams scored late in the third quarter to maintain the two-goal margin. IU scored on another outside shot, this one coming from graduate student Allison Campbell.
Fournier completed her hat trick with another five-meter penalty early in the fourth. Michigan scored late, lobbing it into the far right corner, but IU responded quickly, icing the game with a lob shot of its own from junior Shelby Taylor on the ensuing attack.
Despite a 35-28 shot advantage in favor of Indiana, both teams were held low in scoring, thanks in large part to the defensive showcase put on by both team's goalies. Hoosiers keeper Jessica Gaudreault recorded a new career high with 16 saves and one steals. UM's goalkeeper recorded an equal amount, a new career-high for her as well.
Indiana (12-5) will head to Oneonta, NY to compete in the Western Round Robin next weekend March 5-6.
