Hoosiers Split Home Doubleheader

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 65 Indiana men’s tennis team fell 4-3 against No. 50 Minnesota, but came back to beat Vincennes 7-0 Sunday in Bloomington.
The Hoosiers (12-12) played the first match on their outdoor courts and despite dropping the doubles point and first singles match to the Gophers, Indiana responded with singles wins by senior Dimitrije Tasic (6-3, 6-2) and sophomore Chris Essick (6-1, 6-4).
Sophomore Michael Sellitto gave the Hoosiers a brief 3-2, but Minnesota (9-8) evened the match with a win at No. 4 singles.
The match would come down to No. 2 singles, where sophomore Daniel Bednarczyk battled back after dropping the first set 7-5 to force and win a tiebreak 7-4 in the second set. Bednarczyk went up 2-0 and 3-1 but Ruben Weber of Minnesota came back to tie it at 4-4 and won the third set 6-4 to give the Gophers the 4-3 win.
Indiana got off to a quick start in doubles against Vincennes, as Essick and Bednarczyk won at No. 2 doubles 8-0 and freshmen Kellen Bates and Matthew McCoy clinched the point with am 8-2 win. Tasic and junior Sven Lalic won their doubles match 8-3.
In singles sophomore Alek Davila got things started for the Hoosiers with a 6-0, 6-0 victory to put Indiana up 2-0 in the match.
Bates, McCoy and Rivers followed suit as they won in straight sets, to give the Hoosiers a 5-0 advantage.
Sophomore Elliott Yee battled to win a hard fought first set 6-4 and won his second set 6-0 to put IU up 6-0. Lalic wrapped up the match for the Hoosiers with a 10-point tiebreak, which he won 10-8.
Up next the Hoosiers travel to Lincoln, Neb., for a match Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET against Nebraska. The Hoosiers are home again for their final match in Bloomington, senior day against Penn State on April 13 at 12:00 p.m.
