BOISE, Idaho – The Indiana softball team defeated Weber State in a 5-1 decision this afternoon and held a 3-0 lead over Boise State in the nightcap, but darkness set in and forced the game to be suspended in the top of the fifth inning. That contest will be resumed and completed tomorrow at Noon ET.
INDIANA 5, WEBER STATE 1
The Hoosiers took advantage of Wilcat errors to help themselves to a 5-1 win over Weber State in Indiana’s first game of the day at the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Boise, Idaho.
The Hoosiers tallied just two hits in the game, a solo shot by Michelle Huber and a triple by Jenna Abraham, but that was all the offense they would need as two key errors in the top of the sixth plated four IU runs.
Lora Olson (1-7) was solid through 7.0 innings in the circle. She struck out six WSU batters and surrendered just one earned run on five hits.
Both teams remained scoreless until the Wildcats pushed a run across in the top of the fourth on an RBI-double to centerfield.
Huber used one swing of the bat to erase the Hoosiers’ one-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth. The sophomore drove a pitch over the scoreboard in left field to tie the ballgame at 1-1.
Abraham opened the sixth with a triple to right before Lalich reached on a walk to give IU runners on the corners. Kassi Farmer laid down a bunt and reached safely as Weber State’s MaCauley Flint checked the runner back to third and made no attempt to get Farmer at first. With bases loaded and two outs, Shelby Gogreve put the ball in play to WSU’s Brooke Ford. Ford’s throw to get Gogreve was off the mark, allowing two runs to score and give Indiana a 3-1 lead and leave runners on first and third. Erin Lehman sent another ground ball into play, and another Weber State error resulted in a pair of runs for the Hoosiers.
Olson would shutout the Wildcats in the top of the seventh, ending the game with her sixth strikeout of the contest to capture her first win of the season.
INDIANA 3, BOISE STATE 0 (Suspended in top of the fifth)
With no lights at Dona Larsen Park and darkness setting in, the umpire decided to suspend the game in the top of the fifth inning where Indiana held a 3-0 lead over Boise State. Both teams will resume play tomorrow at Noon.
The Hoosiers three runs all occurred in the top of the fourth inning. Jenna Abraham walked to start the frame and advanced to second on Natalie Lalich’s second single of the contest. With runners on first and second, Farmer drove an outside pitch out to the fence in right to drive in Abraham from second and put runners on second and third. Michelle Huber followed with a double down the left field line to clear the bases and give IU a 3-0 lead over the Broncos.
Boise State threatened to strike in the bottom half of the fifth after pushing a runner over to third, but the Hoosiers would get out of the inning and head into the top of the fifth.
Brianna Meyer connected on a one-out single to center field in the top of the fifth; however conditions were considered to dark to continue play and the game was suspended.
After continuing that game tomorrow afternoon, Indiana will then close the weekend with Valparaiso immediately following the concluding of the Indiana/Boise State game.
