IU Splits Matches with No. 41 DePaul and IUPUI

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 34 Indiana women's tennis team split its two matches on Saturday with a tough loss to No. 41 DePaul and win over IUPUI.
In doubles against DePaul, Indiana found itself playing catchup early after losing the No. 3 doubles match between Katie Klyczek and Carolyn Chupa and DePaul's Patricia Fargas and Ana Vladutu, 8-3.
The Hoosiers evened the doubles score with an 8-7 (7-3) victory from the tandem of Kayla Fujimoto and Sophie Garre at No. 2 doubles. However, the Blue Demons stole the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Klyczek was first to put the Hoosiers on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over DePaul's Patricia Fargas at No. 1. Indiana then took the lead with Garre's 7-5, 7-5 win over Jasmin Kling in the No. 3 match. However, DePaul won the next four singles matches to clinch the team win, 5-2.
"The DePaul match was a very disappointing loss," head coach Lin Loring said. "They deserved to win, there is a reason why they are on a 15 match win streak. They played the big points better than we did. We certainly had opportunities but could not convert. We were like a football team that could get to the Red Zone but could not score. It was a frustrating afternoon."
In match two against IUPUI, the Hoosiers swept through the doubles matches to take the point out of the gate.
Kim Schmider made it 2-0 Indiana lead with a straight-set win at No. 5 over Julie Brockman, 6-1, 6-0. Garre followed with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 to give IU its third point. Alecia Kauss then clinched it for IU with another 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 2.
Gabrielle Rubenstein (No. 4), Paula Gutierrez (No. 3) and Mary Beth King (No. 6) made it a 7-0 margin in favor of Indiana with singles wins.
The Hoosiers will play host to Purdue on Friday, Mar. 14. The match will begin at 3 p.m. ET inside the IU Tennis Center.
