Border Battle Clash On Deck for Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana track & field team will travel to Louisville this weekend for the Border Battle meet on Saturday April 12 at Cardinal Park.
The meet has historically been a battle of the Indiana schools (Indiana and Notre Dame) against Kentucky schools (Kentucky and Louisville). This year the meet will have a different twist as Kentucky is out and Purdue is in. The meet will be a scored meet with Indiana and Purdue against Notre Dame and Louisville.
The meet is scheduled to get underway on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the men’s and women’s hammer throw and shot put at the throws field.
Running events at Cardinal Park will start at 12:00 p.m. with prelims of hurdles and 100m dashes. The final event of the day will be the men’s 4X400-meter relay at 4:30 p.m.
The Indiana track & field team continued the outdoor season last week as a small group ventured west for the Stanford Invitational and a larger group traveled south to Alabama for the Crimson Tide Invitational.
Freshman Amanda Behnke set the 10th best time in program history in the 5,000-meter run and junior Evan Esselink set the sixth fastest time in the 10,000-meter run.
Behnke, finished sixth in her heat in a time of 16:28.83, the 10th fastest time in school history in the women’s 5K. Esselink, running his fist race of the outdoor season, crossed the finish line in 29:28.39, the sixth fastest time in school history for the men’s 10K. Junior Rorey Hunter won his section of the men’s 5K in 13:55.20. His time was five seconds off the top-10 in program history.
Senior Arianne Raby won the 1,500-meter as she crossed the finish line in 4:27.14. Fellow senior Kyla Buckley won the shot put with a meet record 17.08m.
Sydney Clute finished third in the pole vault competition with a clearance of 3.97m.
Middle distance runners Tre’Tez Kinnaird and Jordan Gornall had solid races to open their outdoor seasons. Gornall finished second in the 1,500-meter run in 3:49.90 and Kinnaird finished fourth in the 800-meter run in 1:49.74.
