BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 18th ranked Indiana University baseball team (21-11) plays host to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET. Indiana saw its 9-game winning streak snapped in a one-run loss to Morehead State on Sunday. Trailing by five runs entering the ninth inning, the Hoosiers got a grand slam from Scott Donley and had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the inning but came up just short.
In the first game of the series against the Eagles on Friday, senior LHP Joey DeNato notched his 31st career win, setting a new school record for wins by a pitcher. He allowed one run on five hits in five innings of work. DeNato is also the IU all-time leader in strikeouts (257).
Junior 1B Sam Travis also had hit 10-game hit streak end on Sunday. It was the second 10-game hit streak of the year for Travis, as he hit .500 with 5 HR, 18 RBI and 13 runs scored during the most recent streak.
Junior C/OF Kyle Schwarber has a 13-game hit streak entering this week. He is hitting .415 with three HR, 11 RBI and 15 runs scored.
Probably Starting Pitchers
Sr. LHP Brian Korte (0-0, 3.00) vs. LHP Ryan Thurston (0-0, 4.50)
HOT CORNER ON A HOT STREAK
IU third baseman Dustin DeMuth is swinging a hot stick lately, despite seeing his 16-game hit streak come to an end in the series finale at Iowa. During the hit streak, he hit .452 with 12 RBI and 13 runs scored. In addition, DeMuth has reached base successfully in 29 consecutive contests.
BASE PATH THIEVERY
Casey Rodrigue broke loose during IU's road series victory at Jacksonville, stealing five bases in as many attempts; including a 3-steal day in game two. It marked the first Hoosier to swipe three bags in a game since Micah Johnson did so vs. Evansville on March 27, 2011. The Louisiana native led all of NJCAA D-II and D-III with 68 stolen bases for LSU-Eunice in 2013. For the season, Rodrigue ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 10 steals.
HOME SWEET HOME
Indiana University opened the doors of Bart Kaufman Field in 2013 and the Hoosiers have provided a home record of 27-5. Indiana posted a 19-3 mark during the inaugural season and sits at 8-2 thus far in 2014. The city of Bloomington and surrounding communities have responded in a big way, ranking in the top-30 nationally for average attendance. This season, an average of 2,378 fans have attended the first 10 contests.
