BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana first baseman Sam Travis had a productive weekend in Indiana's sweep at Penn State and was named Big Ten Player of the Week by the conference on Monday. It is his second weekly conference honor of 2014 (April 8) and sixth of his career.
The junior hit a home run in each game of the series at Penn State as Indiana swept the three road games to clinch at least a share of the 2014 Big Ten regular season championship. Not a single player, home or visiting, had hit a home run the entire season at Medlar Field at PSU, before Travis did it three times in one weekend.
The Orland Park, Ill., native hit .357 (5-for-14) in IU's three games against the Nittany Lions with three home runs, six RBI and seven runs scored. He also added a double and slugged 1.071 in the series.
In game one on Friday, Travis hit a solo home run deep to center field in Indiana's 10-0 shutout win. On Saturday, he was 2-for-5 with an RBI double and another solo home run. He ended his weekend with a two-run opposite field homer on Sunday to go along with an RBI single.
For the season, Travis leads the Big Ten in home runs (10), RBI (52), hits (73) and total bases (119) and is second in batting average (.371) and runs scored (47).
The No. 8 Hoosiers head to No. 11 Louisville tonight to take on the Cardinals at 6 p.m. ET. Listen to the game at WHCC 105.1 FM or online at IUHoosiers.com.
Indiana will then wrap up the regular season schedule this week with three games at home vs. Minnesota beginning on Thursday, May 15. One win in that series would give IU the outright Big Ten regular season title for the second straight season.
