OMAHA, Neb. - The Indiana Hoosiers (40-13, 21-3 Big Ten), remained in the winner's bracket of the tournament with a 5-0 victory over No. 5 seed Michigan on Thursday night. The Hoosiers defeated No. 8 seed Iowa in the first round, 5-2.
Indiana starting pitcher Christian Morris (6-3) earned the win, allowing one hit over 7.0 innings. Scott Effross and Jake Kelzer pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respecitvely, to close out the Hoosiers seventh shutout win of the year.
Dustin DeMuth scored the game's first run in the seventh inning on an infield single by Will Nolden. After Casey Rodrigue laced a 2-run triple a couple batters later, Kyle Schwarber launched his 11th home run of the season - a 2-run shot - to put the Hoosiers ahead, 5-0.
Head Coach Tracy Smith picked up win No. 600 in his 18-year coaching career on Thursday. He is also 15-7 all-time in Big Ten Tournament games.
The one-hitter tossed by Indiana is just the second in the history of the Big Ten Tournament. The other one-hitter came in 2000.
A win by the Hoosiers advances them to Sunday's championship game. If Michigan State wins, the two teams will play again on Saturday with the winner advancing to the championship game.
Indiana has won 28 of its last 31 games overall and 13 of the last 14 entering Saturday
IU starting pitchers have no allowed more than three earned runs in the last 49 games.
