BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Seniors Audra Heilman and Maggie Olson and junior Sydney will play with and compete against top collegiate players, current National Team members and members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team after being selected for the Women’s National Championship.
The trio is among a field of athletes that will be split up into eight regional squads to compete in Lancaster, Pa., June 16-21 for the prestigious title of national champion.
The Women’s National Championship serves as the selection trials for the U.S. Women’s National Squad. Most recently IU alum and Hoosiers All-America Kayla Bashore played for the US National Field Hockey team and represented the USA at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
“We are very happy and proud that Audra, Sydney and Maggie were all selected to compete in the Women’s National Championship,” IU head coach Amy Robertson said. “They are all talented and hard-working athletes and continue to be great representatives of the Indiana Field Hockey program. This is the second time around for Audra and Sydney and they gained so many positive things from the Championship Tournament last year and now Maggie will also have this opportunity to grow her game and gain more experience. Each of them will also have a chance to be selected for Junior National camp which is the next step toward selection to our Senior and Junior Women’s National Teams.”
This fall Heilman became the fifth player in the history of the IU Field Hockey program to earn All-America honors. Heilman was also named a First Team All-Region honoree, while Supica was named a Second Team All-Region honoree. Olson was one of the best goalies in the Big Ten this season as she led the conference in saves per game and was fourth in the league in shutouts with three.
Indiana associate head coach Phil Edwards will serve as an assistant coach for one of the regional squads for the Women’s National Championship.
The Women’s Hockey World Cup is set to begin on June 2-14 and will be held in The Hague, Netherlands with coverage on ESPN3.
