BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana field hockey head coach Amy Robertson has announced the promotion of assistant coach Phil Edwards to Associate Head Coach.
Edwards, a native of Heswall, England, will enter his third season with the field hockey program in the fall of 2014.
“Phil has been a tremendous asset to the growth of our program over the past couple of years,” Robertson said. “Specifically he has helped in the technical hockey development of our student- athletes and with his extraordinary ability to develop skill and improve the overall performance of our Goalkeepers. His expertise with video technology and analysis has brought our ability to provide efficient and purposeful information to the players to a whole new level.”
Edwards came to Indiana after working with the WC Eagles Field Hockey Club in Spring City, Penn. and brings with him years of experience as well as England Hockey and USA Field Hockey Level 3 coaching qualifications.
A 2005 graduate of Loughborough University, Edwards helped his squad to two British University Championships (2002, '03), two National Indoor Championship titles (2003, '04, `05) as well as three European Indoor Championships (2004, '05, '06). He was also a member of the England U18 Squad in 2000.
“I am incredibly proud to be a Hoosier and I am continuously thankful for the privilege that I have of coming to work in the capitol of Hoosier Nation on a daily basis,” Edwards said. “It is an honor to be associated with Indiana University, the athletic department and the field hockey program.”
“It has been an exciting spring for the team and I am already looking forward to the fall season,” Edwards added. “As coaches we get to work with a great group of student-athletes who continue to grow as individuals as well as a team whether that be in the classroom or on the hockey field. The atmosphere around this group makes this a special program to be associated with.”
Edwards has a busy summer ahead, as in addition to preparations for the upcoming fall season he will have the honor of serving in various coaching duties. Among them, Edwards will be an assistant coach with the Midwest High Performance Program, Futures Elite Championships and Women’s National Championships.
Robertson said she is happy with the work Edwards has done with the team and looks forward to the future with him on the staff.
“His role with the team has improved our players’ overall understanding of the game and also their ability to accurately assess individual and team performance,” Robertson said. “Phil is one of the few assistant coaches in the country who possesses a USA Hockey Level III coaching accreditation which speaks to his high level of hockey knowledge and experience. I have felt so fortunate to have someone with his experience and teaching ability on our staff combined with his passion for the game and promoting understanding. He is very deserving of this promotion and I look forward to continuing to work with him and the rest of our staff to build a top program among the nation’s elite.”
