Ahbe, Clute All-Americans at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Kelsie Ahbe returned to the site of her first NCAA Championships, in her freshman year and earned her second All-America honor with a second-place finish in the pole vault. Ahbe and sophomore teammate Sydney Clute both earned All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Hayward Field.
Ahbe cleared 4.40m (14-5.25) to finish runner-up in the event and set an IU school record. Ahbe’s finish is the best finish for the Hoosiers in the women’s pole vault since Vera Neuenswander finished in second-place in 2009.
Sophomore Sydney Clute also earned a spot on the podium as she tied for eighth-place with a clearance of 4.15m (13-7.25).
With Ahbe and Clute earning All-America honors it is the second time in the last four years the Hoosiers have had two women earn All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Ahbe and Neuenswander finished fourth and sixth respectively in 2011.
Since 2008 the IU pole vaulters have earned 11 All-America honors and have had seven different athletes qualify for a NCAA Championship meet.
Redshirt freshman Matt Schwartzer earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with a 17th place finish in the 5,000m run in a time of 14:08.38.
Tomorrow the Hoosiers will close out competition at the NCAA Championships with Kyla Buckley in the shot put at 4:00 PM ET and Rorey Hunter in the final of the 1,500m run at 5:18 PM ET.
