BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Seniors Audra Heilman and Maggie Olson and junior Sydney Supica represented the Indiana Field Hockey program at the Women's National Championship June 16-21 in Lancaster, Pa. Supica's Eagle team beat Olson's Team Freedom for the National Championship.
The set-up of this year's tournament ensured that each team participating would be made up of a combination of players from all over the country, with diverse playing backgrounds and styles. Indiana associate head coach Phil Edwards served as a coach for one of the teams as well.
Olson said it was a great experience being able to represent Indiana and compete against some of the best players in the country.
"Competing at this year's Women's National Championship in Lancaster was an honor for all three of us," Olson said. "Being able to represent Indiana among some of the best players in the country was an incredible developmental experience, and we're excited to take the lessons we've learned here about competiveness, team dynamics, problem solving and the will to win back to our home pitch."
"It has truly been a privilege to bring the skills and passion for hockey we've built at Indiana to an outside tournament, and an even greater privilege to be able to wear a jersey with "USA" printed on the front," she added. "This tournament has been a wonderful experience, and even though we're competing against each other this week, we are ready to return to Indiana together and help our team have the best season possible."
The Hoosiers will get the 2014 season underway in Louisville, Ky., on Aug. 29 against New Hampshire.
The Women's National Championship serves as the selection trials for the U.S. Women's National Squad. Most recently IU alum and Hoosiers All-America Kayla Bashore played for the US National Field Hockey team and represented the USA at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
