BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men’s tennis head coach Randy Bloemendaal has announced the addition of Sander Koning as an assistant coach for the program.
Koning played and coached at Clemson University and was most recently an assistant coach at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va., from 2011-14.
While at Old Dominion, Koning coached three All-Conference players, including Carlos Lopez-Villa, who won the ITA Regional Singles Championships in 2013 and was ranked as high as No. 30. Koning also coached the doubles team of Lopez-Villa and Can Cetinel to a season high ranking of No. 24.
“I think Sander brings dependability, reliability and someone who has been in nearly every arena that we are trying to achieve and go to,” Bloemendaal said. “We are extremely fortunate to have this good and noble young man join our program.”
While at Old Dominion Koning helped the tennis team achieve their highest GPA in school history and had four All-Academic selections.
Prior to working at Old Dominion, Koning was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Clemson University. Koning played at Clemson and was a two-time All-ACC selection and four-time All-ACC Academic honoree. Koning was a team captain during his senior year on the tennis team and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Koning earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Marketing from Clemson and a master’s degree in Sport Management in 2008.
“I appreciate the opportunity that coach Bloemendaal is giving me by bringing me to IU,” Koning said. “I have heard many great things about Coach Bloemendaal and the IU program. I am eager to learn, share and contribute to this program and help the team reach its goals. Go Hoosiers!”
Former Indiana men’s tennis assistant coach Patric Hynes left the Hoosiers to become the head coach of men’s and women’s tennis at Lee University.
