ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced on Wednesday (July 9) that 684 student-athletes have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes student-athletes from every institution and 37 different sports who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.
The 2013-14 class of Distinguished Scholar Award recipients includes 101 student-athletes who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the previous academic term. Indiana had six student-athletes earn a 4.0 GPA during the year - Erica Ridderman (Women's Cross Country), Abby Smith (Women's Soccer), Dimitrije Tasic (Men's Tennis), Shannon Murdy (Women's Tennis), Gabrielle Rubenstein (Women's Tennis) and Jordan Haverly (Volleyball). This group of honorees is pursuing diverse fields of study with a list of majors that include art, business, chemistry, economics, engineering, journalism, mathematics and many others.
Indiana had 49 student-athletes receive the award, led by eight honorees for the women's track and field team. The women's tennis team had six honorees while women's soccer had five recipients.
"These incredible student-athletes uphold IU Athletics' proud tradition of excellence in the classroom," Indiana Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass said. "We are honored to have them representing this great institution."
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student-athlete's academic career.
A complete list of the 2013-14 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award winners from all schools is linked at the top of the page.
