BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the next couple months, we will take a look back at some of the players and teams from the Indiana Water Polo program that have made it the program that it is today - one of the best in the country. This week, we look back at the 2003 season.
The 2003 team consisted of two ACWPC (Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches) All-American's (Kristin Stanford, Krista Peterson) and three All-CWPA Championship members (Kristin Stanford, Krista Peterson, Jessica Goldner). As many of the teams in Indiana Water Polo, this team excelled in the classroom - receiving many academic accolades.
In only their third season in the CWPA (Collegiate Water Polo Association), Indiana had a strong 7-1 conference record, coming out of the Southern Division. The overall record of 26-11 is tied for the second most wins in program history.
Throughout the year, the Hoosiers won a pair of invitational championships. In the Princeton Invitational, they defeated Bucknell, Brown, Harvard, and UC Santa Barbara to bring home the crown. One month later the team brought home another trophy, defeating La Verne and host-school Cal State San Bernadino to win the CSUSB Coyote Classic.
In post-season play, Indiana defeated Brown in the championship match of the CWPA Championships to win the first conference championship in program history and to qualify for the first NCAA Championships appearance in school history. Their trip to the 2003 NCAA Championships is the only time in school history that the Hoosiers participated in the final four.
