GLEN COVE, N.Y. - Indiana University senior golfer Elizabeth Tong became the first golfer to advance to the round of 32 on Wednesday at the U.S Women's Amateur National Championship at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, New York.
Tong defeated USF's Ashley Burke 5-and-4 in the first round of match play to advance to the round of 32. Burke went 1-up on the fourth hole, but Tong came back to make it all-square on the par-3 fifth hole.
From that point on Tong could not be stopped as she gained a stroke advantage on hole six, and added another stroke on seven to go 2-up. She made it 3-up on the par-3 10th hole, followed by 4-up on 13 and 5-up on 14 to seal the match.
After two rounds of stroke play on August 4 and 5, Tong was tied for 46th, posting rounds of 72 and 72.
Tong will face off against fellow Canadian Augusta James on Thursday, teeing off at 7:40 a.m. ET.
