BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Women's Soccer (4-4, 0-2 Big Ten) team suffered a 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon to No. 8 Penn State at Bill Armstrong Stadium, as the Hoosiers were only able to get one shot on goal in the match.
"We made a mistake in the 11th minute and kind of put our heads down after that," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "We started to play stronger in the second half, but we have to be better in transition. And we didn't make the best decisions in the final third. When you play a very good team like Penn State, you aren't going to get many chances so you have to make the ones you do get count."
Penn State (6-1, 2-0 Big ten) took advantage of an early miscue in the IU defensive third, as Emily Hurd gathered a loose ball outside the box, dribbled in and beat IU goalkeeper Sarah Stone in a 1v1 situation. The goal gave the Nittany Lions the 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
After PSU controlled play in the early stages of the first half, the Hoosiers had a couple chances but shots by Veronica Ellis, Kailee Feinstein and Rachel Romero were all wide of the frame. As a result, the Hoosiers trailed 1-0 going into the locker room at halftime.
Indiana came out to start the second half determined to get the equalizer, but it would be Penn State taking advantage of another misplay by the IU defenders to take a 2-0 lead on Raquel Rodriguez's third goal of the season.
The Hoosiers best chance came in the 74th minute when Veronica Ellis' header had a lot of pace on it but she was unlucky and hit it right at the PSU keeper, who made the save.
In the 87th minute, Penn State added a third goal of the day with Mallory Peterson getting credit for the marker at the back post.
"We made some mistakes today, but they are things that we know we can fix," Indiana senior Abby Smith said. "I think we can use this game, against one of the best teams in the country, and learn from it as we continue through the rest of the Big Ten schedule."
Team stats for the game showed Penn State with a 15-7 edge in overall shots and a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Sarah Stone made three saves in goal for Indiana while Britt Eckerstrom had to make just one.
The Hoosiers continue Big Ten play on Thursday, traveling to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network and can also be viewed online at BTN2Go.com, depending on your cable television provider.
