BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - No. 17 Indiana looks to improve to 6-0 as the Hoosiers head to Ball State to take on the Cardinals Wednesday afternoon.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers picked up a 1-0 victory against Miami (Ohio) in Oxford. Audra Heilman found the back of the net on a breakaway off of the assist by Nicole Volgraf. Senior goalkeeper Maggie Olson recorded two saves in her second shutout of the season.
BATTLING BALL STATE
The Cardinals lead the Mid-American Conference with a 3-2 record, having picked up wins against Davidson, Appalachian State and Colgate. Ball State dropped a tough game against Ohio State on Sunday in overtime, 3-2. Junior Bethany Han and Merinda Morley scored for the Cardinals.
This is the 15th time the Hoosiers and Cardinals have faced off, with Indiana holding the 9-5 series lead. The last time these two teams met, the Hoosier came away with a 6-1 victory in Bloomington.
BROKEN RECORD
The 5-0 start by the Hoosiers is an Indiana program record. Indiana has started off the season 4-0 on three different occasions: 2012, 2011 and 2003.
HOOSIERS LAND IN RANKINGS
Indiana was ranked No. 17 in the latest Penn Monto / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. This is the first time since Sept. 18, 2012 the Hoosiers have been ranked, and the highest ranking since coming in at No. 15 in 2011.
ON A NATIONAL SCALE
Indiana is one of only six unbeaten teams left in the nation. The Hoosiers also sit near the top of numerous statistical categories, including fourth in assists per game (3.80), points per game (11.40) and save percentage (0.882).
In addition, senior Audra Heilman is second in the nation in points per game (4.00) and third in goals per game (1.60).
B1G LEADERS
The Hoosiers currently lead the Big Ten in scoring margin (3.86), scoring average (4.89). On the defensive side, Indiana also leads in goals allowed per game (0.80) and defensive saves (4.00).
Audra Heilman leads the conference in points (20), points per game (4.00) and goals per game (1.60). Junior Sydney Supica leads the Big Ten in defensive saves (4). Maggie Olson is second in the conference in save percentage at .852.
HEILMAN AND OLSON CLIMB RECORD BOOK
With 8 goals thus far on the season, Audra Heilman now sits in third place in all-time career goals with 27.
Goalkeeper Maggie Olson now ranks third all-time in career shutouts with five.
SIX PICK UP STICKS
Six new Hoosiers will make their home debut on Friday, Freshmen Glenne Carter (California), Cameron Gibson (Virginia), Maddie Latino (Kentucky), Marcia Lewis (California), Taylor Pearson (Canada) and Abby Urbanek (Illinois) are suiting up for the Hoosiers this fall.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Seniors Maggie Olson and Audra Heilman are both serving as team captains for the second consecutive year.
OF NOTE...
-Four seniors are playing in their final season for the Cream and Crimson - Caitlin Bearish, Audra Heilman, Corinne Karch and Maggie Olson.
-Audra Heilman, Maggie Olson and Sydney Supica were named to the 2014 Big Ten Players to Watch List.
-The returning members of this season’s squad accounted for 100 of the 138 points and 35 of the 49 goals last season.
-In the third 2014 Penn Monto/NFHCA Poll of the season, eight opponents of the Hoosiers in 2014 are ranked, including six other Big Ten programs.
