HANAHAN, S.C. -- The Indiana women's golf team wrapped up play at the Powerade Cougar Classic with a final-round score of 307, finishing 18th in the 23-team field at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, South Carolina.
The Hoosiers finished with a 54-hole score of 909 (308-294-307). Arkansas won the tournament at 846, followed by UCLA (853), Duke (856), Virginia (861) and Mississippi State (861) rounding out the top five.
Senior Elizabeth Tong posted a top-20 finish in her first event of the season, taking tied for 15th with a final score of 214 (73-68-73). Tong went +1 on Tuesday, starting the day strong at -4 through the first six holes. She gave back two strokes with a double bogey on one, and sandwiched a birdie on seven with bogeys on six and eight. Dealing with weather delays due to rain and lightning throughout the day, Tong bogeyed two of the final three holes.
Junior Camille Chevalier had her best round of the tournament Tuesday, finishing with a team-best 72 to place tied for 42nd (75-75-72/222). Sitting at +2 through 16 holes, Chevalier finished the tournament strong with a birdie on the par-4 11th hole, followed by birdie on the par-3 12th hole to climb back to even par.
Junior Marissa DeCola posted an 84 and finished tied for 108th (83-72-84/239). DeCola had a birdie on the par-3 16th hole and was holding steady at 5-over before back-to-back triple bogeys on 10 and 11 put her at +11 with two holes remaining.
Making her collegiate debut freshman Taylor Howerton also placed tied for 108th (80-79-80/239). While Howerton did not have any birdies in the round, she kept her compound errors to a minimum, with no double bogeys and 10 holes of par.
Also in her collegiate debut, freshman Alix Kong finished 115th (80-81-82/243). After struggling in the early going, Kong bounced back to finish the round by going par or better on three of the final four holes.
The Hoosiers return to Bloomington to prep for the next tournament on their schedule, the Betsy Rawls Invitational, Oct. 12-14 at the University of Texas.
