MUNCIE, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey improved to 6-0 on the season as the Hoosiers shutout Ball State, 2-0 on Wednesday. The 6-0 start continues a program record of most wins to open a season.
Despite 12 shots in the first period for Indiana, the Hoosiers and Cardinals (3-3) remained scoreless at the half.
“While we didn’t put a goal away in the first half, we were playing some really nice hockey,” said Indiana head coach Amy Robertson. “We were composed, we had a lot of purpose and I thought we defended well. In the second half, we opened up the field a little more and stayed the course.”
Senior Audra Heilman struck first for Indiana as she scored off a pass from Karen Lorite to put the Hoosiers on the board in the 36th minute. The goal was Heilman’s ninth of the season. In 2013, she recorded 10 goals on the year.
Just four minutes later, Junior Sydney Supica would add her third goal off the season on a penalty shot.
The defense kept the Cardinals away from the cage as Ball State did not record a single shot on goal.
“We really stayed organized and that made it difficult for Ball State to get open on us,” said Robertson. “ Mollie Getzfread played really solid defense and had some tackles in there. We didn’t give up the chances, which was a real positive.”
Senior goalkeeper Maggie Olson picked up her 22nd career win, which ties her with Alex Mann for second all-time in program history.
The Hoosiers will travel to Ohio University on Saturday to face the Bobcats at 1 p.m.
