LAST WEEK
The Hoosiers started Big Ten play last week at home against Ohio State and Penn State. In Friday's game, the Hoosiers had a one-goal lead - thanks to Jessie Bujouves' fifth goal of the year - until three seconds left in regulation. It was then that the Buckeyes were awarded a penalty kick - which they converted - to tie the game. In the overtime period, OSU scored the game-winner in the 97th minute.
Sunday's game against No. 8 Penn State saw the Nittany Lions take advantage of a pair of miscues in the Hoosiers' defensive third and then added a third goal late to hand the Hoosiers a 3-0 loss.
AGAINST THE COMPETITION
Indiana is 5-10-3 all-time against Illinois, but won both meetings last year. The Hoosiers won 3-2 in Bloomington during the regular season and followed that up with a 5-3 win over the Illini during the Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers have never won three in a row against Illinois.
The Hoosiers are tied in the all-time series with Northwestern, 10-10-2. But IU has claimed victory in each of the last three meetings dating back to a 1-0 win in Evanston in 2011. Each of the last 10 meetings have been decided by one goal and 16 of the 22 all-time clashes have been one-goal affairs.
POP THE "CHAMPAIGN"
Last year, Champaign, Illinois, was the site of a couple significant milestones for the IUWS program. It was where the Hoosiers made their first appearance in the Big Ten Tournament since 2007. Not only that, they defeated the host Fighting Illini in the quarterfinals, 5-3.
STRIVE FOR FIVE
Junior midfielder Jessie Bujouves leads the Hoosiers with five goals this season. And while the Hoosiers have scored 12 goals as a team so far this year, Bujouves is the only one that has recorded more than one marker. Entering play this weekend, she is tied for seventh in the Big Ten with her five goals.
Additionally, Bujouves had three goals and 11 points for her career prior to this season.
SMITH'S SERVICE
Freshman Kayla Smith saw her streak of three straight games with a point end last Friday against Ohio State. She scored a goal against UC Irvine and followed that up by assisting on both game-winning goals in Columbus the weekend of Sept. 5-7.
Smith is the only true freshman in the Big Ten with at least three assists so far this season.
GETTING "FRESH"
Through the first four weekends of the 2014 season, there have been a couple of freshmen that have made a splash for the Hoosiers. In looking at the stats, Kayla Smith, Mykayla Brown and Annelie Leitner have all scored goals this season.
Looking deeper, Smith has three assists to tie for the team lead while Brown also has an assist.
Another new face - Molly Pittman - has registered two assists on the year, equalling her total from last year while playing at Samford.
Defensively, freshman Taylor Coley has started every game as a defender. She has been inserted as a central defender and played well alongside redshirt sophomomore Marissa Borschke.
"V" FOR VICTORY
Sophomore midfielder Veronica Ellis (Naperville, Ill.) has showed a penchant for coming up big in the clutch. She scored three game-winning goals last year as a freshman and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team at the end of the year. But her biggest goal of the season came in the postseason, where she put home the winning marker against DePaul late in the second half of the NCAA Tournament. This season, she has added another winning goal, doing so in overtime against UC Irvine last weekend.
WOOLY BULLY
Senior Jordan Woolums played the role of hero on Sunday against Dayton, scoring the game-winning goal in the 87th minute after the Flyers had tied the game in the 81st minute.
In her career, Woolums has six goals scored and now three of them have been game-winning goals.
