BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana women's tennis team will begin its 2014 fall schedule this weekend as the Hoosiers will participate in the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary on Sept. 19-21 in Williamsburg, Va.
Including IU, there will be players from nine college teams participating including Dartmouth, Marshall, Maryland, Penn, Virginia, VCU, Wake Forest and William & Mary. Play will begin each day at 9:15 a.m. ET. Indiana will play Penn, Marshall and William & Mary in doubles and will take on VCU, Wake Forest and Penn in singles play.
The Hoosiers have four seniors on the active roster this season, all of which have been part of the starting lineup for most of their careers. Katie Klyczek was IU's No. 1 singles player a year ago and has twice earned All-Big Ten recognition in her career, including second team honors in 2014. Carolyn Chupa played the majority of last season in the No. 3 spot and won 21 singles matches. She also had the best winning percentage on the team in doubles play (28-8, .778). Chupa and Klyczek combined to lead the team in doubles wins last year as they were 24-8 overall and 16-6 in No. 1 doubles matches during dual play.
Alecia Kauss also returns for her senior year. She had the most singles wins last year among all players returning for Indiana (26-12) as she played the majority of the season in the No. 4 position. Shannon Murdy was in the singles lineup in 18 dual matches last year and had a 19-9 record in singles play for the year. Kauss and Murdy teamed up in doubles and anchored the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
The sophomore class for Indiana includes Paula Gutierrez, Mary Beth King and Kim Schmider. Gutierrez saw the most action among those three a year ago as she won 19 singles matches as a freshman.
IU welcomes three new faces to the roster in 2014-15 in freshmen Sarah Baron and Stephanie Smith as well as transfer Sarah McClean. McClean, who has one year of eligibility remaining, will have to sit out the 2014-15 season due to transfer rules. Baron, a native of Orlando, Fla., was ranked No. 51 and was a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.com for the 2014 class. Smith was also a five-star recruit and ranked No. 49 by TennisRecruiting.com in this year's class.
Looking ahead to the rest of the fall schedule, beginning in October, IU's four seniors will participate in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in Knoxville, Tenn. on Oct. 17-21. The remaining players on the roster will play in the Hoosier Classic on Oct. 24-26. The Hoosier will end the fall portion of the schedule on Nov. 7-9 at the Western Michigan Super Challenge.
The IU Winter Invitational will get the January schedule started on Jan. 17-19. Indiana's first dual match of 2015 will be against Miami (OH) at home on Jan. 24. That begins the first of 15 home dual matches for the Hoosiers including six home matches in Big Ten play.
