WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Indiana women's tennis team concluded day one of the Tribe Invitational at William & Mary with five singles wins and a pair of doubles wins on Friday. The Hoosiers played doubles against Penn and singles vs. players from VCU and Virginia.
In doubles, IU's Shannon Murdy and Stephanie Smith teamed together to top Penn's Sonya Latycheva and Luba Vazhenina, 8-1. Paula Gutierrez and Kim Schmider also picked up a win in doubles action.
In singles play, Alecia Kauss defeated Virginia's Cassie Mercer, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-6). Schmider topped VCU's Ludivine Burguiere, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) as Smith also won after dropping her first set against VCU's Darya Berezhnaya, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4).
IU's Sarah Baron won in consecutive sets, 6-2, 6-4, over VCU's Alejandra de Lasa. Mary Beth King was also victorious for the Hoosiers over Ana Batiri, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10-3).
"Considering we haven't been able to practice outside because are courts are under construction, it was a pretty good day for us," head coach Lin Loring said. "We got to play outside and we had some really competitive matches, which is what you want from a fall tournament. We played eight set or match tie-breakers, so that shows how even the play was. Alecia had a very nice win over the No. 5 ranked recruit in the 2014 class who plays for Virginia."
Play for day two will resume on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. ET.
