PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- A goal in each half off the feet of Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Tanner Thompson gave Indiana its first Big Ten win of the season in a 2-1 triumph at Rutgers Saturday night at Yurcak Field.Tonight marked the first meeting between the two programs as conference foes, with the Scarlet Knights (3-4, 1-1 B1G) starting their first season in the Big Ten.
Indiana (4-1-2, 1-1- B1G) was on the attack early as shots from Andrew Oliver and Jamie Vollmer were saved by David Greczek in the first three minutes of action. Vollmer had two early shots for the Hoosiers with his second from about 30 yards out wide right of the net.
With 32:37 to play in the first half Tanner Thompson chased down a ball into the box and was taken down by Greczek, awarding a penalty kick to the Hoosiers. Thompson took the kick but it was saved as Greczek dove to his right to block the attempt.
Thompson had another shot in the 17th minute, getting off a hard line drive that was cradled by Greczek. That was followed by a Vollmer shot from 20 yards out with the save from Greczek leading to an IU corner kick.
That corner kick would lead to a 1-0 Indiana lead in the 21st minute as Hollinger-Janzen picked up the loose ball in the box for his second goal of the season. With Thompson sending the ball in, it bounced around in the six-yard area before Femi got a foot on it and hit a low shot into the back of the net.
Rutgers tied things up in the 40th minute when Niel Guzman slid the ball home at the near post after an initial shot from Jason Wright was blocked.
Indiana saw its domination in the shot tally dwindle to 11-7 for the first half, but seven of IU's looks were on frame compared to just one for the Scarlet Knights.
The Hoosiers' first shot of the second half came in the 59th minute when a shot from Hollinger-Janzen off a Thompson free kick was just wide. Thompson's kick curled in an bounced to Femi, who took a wide angle from about two yards out as Greczek was out of position.
Thompson came through with his first goal of the season and what would be the game winner in the 65th minute to put Indiana up 2-1. Thompson took the ball centrally about 25 yards out and ripped a line drive on his fifth shot of the night.
In the 63rd minute Billy McConnell played a perfect ball into Thompson, threading the Rutgers defense. Thompson took the shot across his body, sending it wide left.
The first save of the night for Colin Webb was a big one as he dove to his right to punch away a curling free kick from Erik Sa in the 70th minute. Webb finished with two saves while picking up his fourth win of the season.
Indiana finished with a 17-12 shot advantage, putting nine on frame compared to two for the Scarlet Knights. Thompson led the way with six looks, four of which were on goal.
