EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Indiana Women's Soccer (5-5, 1-3 Big Ten) picked up its first Big Ten win of the season on Sunday with a 1-0 overtime victory at Northwestern thanks to Abby Smith's game-winning goal in the 105th minute. It is her first game-winning goal of the season and seventh of her career.
"This win is a huge momentum builder for us after a tough start to Big Ten play," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "We struggled most of the day trying to get through their defenders but we stayed with it. Tori gave Abby a great, driven ball into the box and Abby was able to get some separation from her defender and went up with everything she had and put it home."
The Hoosiers are now 3-2 in games decided by one goal this season and are 2-1 in overtime games.
The seven game-winning goals for Abby Smith puts her in a tie for fifth place on the IU career list with Carly Samp and Kristin Arnold.
"I just wanted to make sure I got my head on it and put it on frame," Smith said after the game. "When we were lining up, I heard Coach Berbary tell us to make it count. Tori delivered a great ball into the box and I was able to get it past their keeper."
The chance was created when Northwestern was whistled for a foul near the right sideline, about 10 yards off the endline. The opportunity almost mirrored a corner kick, and Keller delivered a ball into the box similar to a corner kick. For Keller, it was her second assist of the season and the fourth by IU defenders.
Sarah Stone was key in goal for the Hoosiers, making a season-high nine saves to pick up the win along with her second shutout of the season.
Indiana will return home this weekend, welcoming Wisconsin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Minnesota at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Both games will feature live video streams on BTN Plus.
